Greencastle, IN – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team scored the game's final nine goals en route to running away with a 17-10 road victory at DePauw University on Saturday afternoon.
Eliza Amber led the scoring charge with four goals, while
Annie Payne and
Bette Imhoff each found the back of the net three times in the win.
Ali Wessel,
Tess Siciliano, and
Reilly Jackman also deposited two goals for the Yeowomen.
Oberlin trailed 10-8 with just over 16 minutes to play, but back-to-back finishes Amber and Siciliano within a 12-second span tied the game and jumpstarted a game-ending nine-goal barrage by the Yeowomen.
Imhoff setup Wessel for the go-ahead ahead goal at 15:42 mark and Amber and Imhoff would follow with free-position finishes to give Oberlin a three-goal lead. The Yeowomen would leave no doubt in the final outcome as Payne, Amber (2), and Imoff tacked on insurance tallies over the final nine minutes.
It was an inauspicious start for the Yeowomen as the Tigers sent in the first four goals of the game before they came to life by responding with four straight scores to even the match. Jackman got Oberlin started as she finished off a feed from
Leah Crowther. Following an 8-meter goal by Payne, Jackman would strike again off a pass from
Solace Porter before Siciliano provided the equalizer off a Payne helper.
The Tigers answered by scoring the final three goals of the opening half to carry a 7-4 lead into the intermission but shortly after the restart Crowther and Imhoff had the Yeowomen back within one. The two foes would essentially trade goals for the next seven minutes of action until the Yeowomen defense tightened up and closed the game with a 10-1 burst over the final 20 minutes.
Oberlin finished with a slight 35-31 edge in shots and won the ground ball battle, 29-21. Imhoff, who matched Payne and Amber with four draw controls, also scooped up a team-high six ground balls. The Yeowomen went 19-of-26 on clears while holding the Tigers to 13-of-25.
Maranda Phillips went all 60 minutes between the pipes and made nine saves.
Both teams are now 3-2 on the year with Oberlin going to 1-0 in the NCAC and DePauw moving to 0-1.
Oberlin returns to action on Wednesday afternoon as it welcomes John Carroll University for a 4 p.m. matinee.
