Knights Knock Down Yeomen in Sweep

Westfield, IN - The Oberlin College baseball team concluded its three-game series against the Calvin College Knights on Saturday afternoon at Grand Park with the Yeomen dropping game one 13-2 in eight innings before going on to lose game two 9-4.

For the third straight game the Yeomen scored first but the trend has not worked out thus far as Oberlin is yet to win from when playing from in front. The Yeomen defense also struggled for the second straight game as the lid-lifter featured six costly errors which resulted in just one of the Knights 13 runs being earned.

A pair of walks setup the Yeomen in the first as they loaded the bases with nobody out after Alexis Castillo singled. However, Oberlin was only able to scratch out a single run on sac fly by Jacob Thompson

The second inning started with James Sullivan lifting a double into left field for his first collegiate hit and he would later score on an RBI single to right field by Ben Reed to make it a 2-0 Oberlin lead.

Local Oberlin native Jackson Schaum (0-1) made his first collegiate start on the bump and the southpaw got through the first two innings clean before his defense let him down in the third as two Yeomen miscues resulted in four unearned runs coming across the dish in the inning.

It was more of the same in the fourth as the Knights broke the game open by tacking on three more runs with just one hit in the frame. A walk, two hit batters, and Jeremy Clark's two-run double off Nick Dawkins made it a 7-2 game and the Knights would never look back from there.

Calvin would go on to post a single tally in the fifth before erupting for five runs in the eighth to cap the game's scoring.

Castillo went 3-for-4 at the dish while Reed finished with two hits as the pair combined for five of the team's seven hits in the game.

The Yeomen would again score first in game two as Castlllo singled to center field to plate  Knowles and hold a 1-0 advantage after the opening frame.

The Knights responsed with a three-run second due in part to a pair of doubles to center to pull in front 3-1 before tacking on another in the third.

Oberlin pulled to within one in the fourth with three stright hits ti start the inning. Castillo led off the frame with a single which was followed by a Thompson triple to plate the Yeomen designated hitter. Freshman Yianni Gardner would back that up with an RBI single of his own to cut the deficit to 4-3 after four innings.

The teams would trade a run apiece in the sixth before Calvin scored two runs each in the seventh and ninth innings to win 9-4.

Castillo paced the Oberlin offense at he went 3-for-4 in game two with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Ben Reed went 2-for-4 at the bottom of the lineup from the shortstop position for the crimson and gold.

The Yeomen head to Muskingum next Saturday, March 14th for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader.
