Baseball Drops a Nail-Biter in Season Opener at Baldwin Wallace

Berea, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team dropped a 7-6 decision on Wednesday afternoon at Baldwin Wallace University.

It was an impressive debut for sophomore transfer Darien Knowles as he finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while junior Lawrence Hamilton finished 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, and a run scored. David Fineman also added two hits to the Yeomen's total of 13 in the game.

The Yeomen used six different hurlers in the contest as they combined to issue just one walk and seven punchouts.

The Yeomen struck first, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning as sophomore Jacob Thompson delivered a two-run single to center that scored Hamilton and Alexis Castillo.

After the Yellow Jackets went out in front with a single tally in the second and two in the third, the Yeomen would reclaim the lead with a three-run fourth. Knowles came through with a two-out two-RBI single through the right side to score Jack Marsjanik and Fineman, who each singled earlier in the inning. Hamilton then followed with a run-scoring single back up the box.

Yeomen sophomore starter Ian Ashby left with the lead after he worked the front four innings, sprinkling seven hits and allowing three runs over 62 pitches. He filled up the zone with 40 strikes as he fanned five without issuing a free pass.

Unfortunately, senior southpaw reliever Bradley Jamison (0-1) was touched up for five hits and four runs in the fifth. He was also hindered by some tough luck along the way that extended the inning to allow BW to claim a 7-5 lead.

After both teams posted zeros in the sixth and seventh innings, Oberlin trimmed the deficit down to one in the eighth as Hamilton belted a two-out RBI double to center to score freshman Chris Wolfe after he led off the inning with a single.

In the ninth, Fineman would reach on an error with two outs, but BW closer Drew Wilson recorded his second strikeout of the inning to preserve the win.

The Yeomen bullpen was impressive down the stretch as the grouping of Zachary Bayfield (1.1), Travis Cann (0.2), Nick Dawkins (0.2), and William Kennedy (0.1) combined to allow just one hit over the final two innings.

Oberlin will head to Westfield, Indiana, on the weekend for a three-game series against the Calvin College Knights (MI) at Grand Park. Friday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m. with Saturday's doubleheader set to start at noon.
