Yeomen Drop a Tight One to Hobart

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team fell on the wrong end of a 5-4 decision on Saturday morning at the John W. Heisman Field House as the visiting Hobart College Statesmen left town with the victory.

Oberlin dropped two tightly contested doubles affairs in the top two positions but the tandem of James Dill and Henry Bulkley were able to pull off an 8-4 win over Thomas Shung and Jack Ledford in the third position. The Yeomen's top duo of Camron Cohen and Sean Billerbeck was defeated 8-5 while Stephen Gruppuso and Elliot Nuss got nipped 8-6 by Kaan Ayman and Harry Lyu in the second slot.

The first two singles flights were the first to finish with the Statesmen taking both bouts to leave them just one point shy of clinching the match. At the top, Alan Dubrovsky took down Gruppuso 6-1, 6-3, while Cohen fell to Ayman by the same scores at No. 2.

The Statesmen would clinch with a victory at No. 4 singles as Lyu handled Dill in straight sets by the scores of 6-3, 7-6.

However, the Yeomen kept battling as senior Zachary Vaughn gutted out a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Walker Anderson at No. 3. Rookie Sean Billerbeck continued to impress as he was an easy 6-3, 6-2 victor over Ledford at No. 5.

Eliott Nuss blanked Jeremy Atwater 6-0 in the first set at No. 6 before dropping the second set, 6-4. However, Nuss regrouped to win the super-breaker.

The loss dropped the Yeomen back to 3-5 on the year. They will return to action on Saturday, March 14 at home against John Carroll University. The first serve is set for 2 p.m.
