Gators Pull Away From Yeowomen in Overtime

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team was unable to hold onto a five-point lead with 3:53 left in the fourth quarter as Allegheny forced overtime before running away with the extra session to defeat Oberlin 67-57 on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.

Cheyenne Arthur led the Yeowomen with 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting while Jasmine Sorrells recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 boards to go along with three blocks.

A pair of Sorrells free throws gave Oberlin an early 8-0 advantage but an 11-3 Allegheny spurt cut the deficit to one, 12-11, with 2:12 remaining in the opening quarter. The Gators would go on to make two freebies from the charity stripe in the closing seconds of the stanza to knot the score at 16-16 after one quarter of play.

Sammy Spanier scored seven of her 10 points early in the second quarter as the Yeowomen began the session on a 11-2 run to build the lead out to nine, 27-18, at the 4:41 mark of the period.

A Jasmine Roberts jumper stretched the margin to double digits, 31-20, with 2:48 to go until the break but the Gators closed the half on a 12-0 run to take a one-point lead into the locker rooms.

A fast break layup by Allegheny just over three minutes into the third quarter gave the visitors a 38-33 advantage and forced an Oberlin timeout. Rowan Smith countered with a jumper at the 3:00 mark to trim the deficit to one, 38-37, but the Gators would not relinquish the lead as they held a slim 42-40 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.

Halfway through the stanza, Arthur went on a 6-0 spurt to not only retake the lead for the Yeowomen but also put her team ahead 51-46 with 3:53 left in the contest but the Gators would to the line trailing 52-51 with 25 ticks remaining. Fortunately for Oberlin, Allegheny only made one of two from the charity stripe before the Yeowomen's game-winning attempt was blocked to force overtime.

The extra frame belonged to the Gators as they began the session on a 7-0 run to open up a 59-52 lead as the Yeowomen would get as close as four, 59-55, thanks to three Mackenzie Michaels free throws before ultimately being outscored 15-5 in overtime to fall 67-57.

Allegheny narrowly outshot Oberlin 35.6% to 30.0% from the floor but was 42.9% (6-of-14) from the beyond the arc compared to the Yeowomen's 17.6% (3-of-17).

Oberlin heads to Hiram on Saturday, February 15 for a 1:00 p.m. tip with the Terriers.
