Oberlin Loses Low-Scoring Affair to Kenyon

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team got off to a slow start offensively and were unable to recover as they fell to the Kenyon College Ladies 55-45 on Wednesday night inside Philips Gym.

Jasmine Sorrells had a game-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds while Cheyenne Arthur scored 11 points and dished out three assists.

Both teams got off to a slow start in this one as a pair of Jai Cunningham free throws gave the Yeowomen a slim 6-5 advantage with 2:25 to go in the opening quarter as the score stood knotted up at 8-8 after the first 10 minutes of play.

An Arthur jumper halfway through the second quarter pulled Oberlin to within one, 13-12, but Kenyon closed the half on a 10-2 run to head to the locker room up 23-14.

Both offenses had trouble getting in the hoop in the first half as Kenyon shot just 17.6% (3-of-17) from the floor while Oberlin was slightly better at 23.1% (3-of-13).

Back-to-back buckets for the Ladies to start the third quarter pushed the margin to 13, 27-14, but Arthur responded with a 3-pointer before Sorrells added a layup to trim the deficit to 8, 27-19, four minutes into the second half.

A jumper in the paint from Cunningham made it a five-point game, 31-25, at the 2:56 mark but both teams would trade buckets for the remainder of the quarter, sending Oberlin to the fourth trailing by five, 37-32.

A pair of Ally Driscoll free throws to begin the quarter cut the deficit to three but the Ladies responded with an 11-2 spurt to open up a 48-36 advantage halfway through the frame.

The Yeowomen would get as close as eight, 48-40, on a free throw from Sorrells with 2:51 to go in the game but the Ladies made 7-of-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to close out a 55-45 road win.

Kenyon held a slight advantage in the paint, outscoring Oberlin 24-16 but the main difference was its 21 points off of 15 Yeowomen turnovers in comparison to just seven Oberlin points on 17 Ladies turnovers.

The Yeowomen make the trip to #4 DePauw on Saturday, February 1 for a 3:00 p.m. NCAC contest.
