Yeomen Comeback Bid Falls Short Against Otterbein

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team scored seven runs over the final three innings but it wasn't enough as the visiting Otterbein University Cardinals left town with a 13-8 win Thursday afternoon at Dill Field.

The Yeomen out-hit the Cardinals 15-12 in the game with Brendan Mapes and Ben Reed leading the Oberlin attack with three hits each.

Otterbein would post a pair of runs in the top of the first but the Yeomen would get one back on a sac fly by Alexis Castillo in the home half of the inning.

The Cardinals would break the game open with a six-run third before adding two more in the fourth to balloon the lead out to 10-1.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Otterbein led 13-1 but the Yeomen continued to fight. The bottom of the frame started with a Reed single and a double from James Kibitel. Rookie Nick Nelson came through with a sac fly and Connor MacDowell also had a running-scoring single. The rally continued with an RBI double from Mapes and a run-scoring single from Lawrence Hamilton.

Oberlin would add on three more in the eighth but the final outcome was never in doubt. Rookie Ian Ashby had a two-run double to left and Nelson also had an RBI single in the inning.

Junior Bradley Jamison took the loss after going two-plus innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits. Ethan Doty earned the win for Otterbein as he moved to 2-4 on the year.

The Yeomen have now lost nine of their last 11 games, falling back to 14-20 on the year. Otterbein moved to 19-16-1.
