Baseball Splits with DePauw

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team split a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against the DePauw University Tigers, falling 7-5 in game one before bouncing back with a 5-1 win in the nightcap.

Senior tri-captain Ian Dinsmore was simply sensational in the win as he moved to 3-1 on the year after working 7.2 innings and allowing just three hits and one run. The right-hander from Cogan Station, Pennsylvania threw 131 pitches, 82 of which were strikes. He fanned five and walked only two in the victory.

Offensively, the Yeomen had 19 hits over the 18 innings with Ben Reed and Brendan Mapes leading Oberlin with four hits each in the doubleheader.

Oberlin scored four of their five runs in the third inning. Mapes got the rally rolling by leading off the frame with a double down the right field line and would score the game's first run on a single back up the box by Parker Goldstein. An ill-advised decision by the Tigers' second baseman allowed another Yeomen run to come across on a fielder's choice before Jack Marsjanik dropped down a perfect squeeze bunt to plate Lawrence Hamilton. The final run of the frame would come courtesy Reed's two-out single to centerfield that sent Alexis Castillo across the dish.

The lone DePauw run of the game came in the top of the fourth but Oberlin would eventually get that tally back in the bottom of the sixth when rookie Nick Nelson delivered a clutch two-out RBI single that scored Reed.

The Tigers, who left 10 on base in the game, left two on in the eighth when Andrew Sugarman came on to get the final out of the inning. In the ninth, the Tigers would threaten again as they loaded the bases in the ninth but freshman Jacob Thompson was able to work out of the jam to preserve the win.

The Yeomen posted the first run of game one as Mapes found pasture in right center with a two-out RBI double in the third.

The Tigers answered back with three runs in the top of the fifth, but Oberlin quickly tied the game back up at 3-3. The home half of the fifth featured a sac fly by Castillo and an opposite-field two-out run-scoring single by Mapes.

Starter David Gaetano would depart after the fifth after he allowed six hits and three runs. The senior southpaw walked four and struck out three.

The Yeomen would use a bevy of pitchers the rest of the way, including five hurlers in the sixth inning alone but not before the Tigers would reclaim the lead with a pair of runs.

The DePauw lead was later 6-3 but the Yeomen would get back within one in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out two-run double by Castillo to score Reed and Nelson.

The Tigers, who stranded 15 base runners in the game, would add an important insurance run in the eighth to give them a little breathing room down the stretch. Oberlin would threaten in the bottom of the eighth as the inning started with a Tigers' error and the Yeomen had the bases loaded with just one out but were unable to push anything across.

Aaron Miller worked three innings in relief to get the win for the Tigers while Nick Dawkins took the loss for Oberlin.

The Yeomen are back in action on Tuesday as they are set to travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
