Cleveland, Ohio — The Oberlin College men's tennis team fell to the No. 12-nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University Spartans 8-1 on Sunday afternoon.
In singles,
Stephen Gruppuso would beat the seventh best player in the central region in the top flight. The Bayport, New York, product prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), for his 11th singles victory of the season and for the team's lone match point.
The Spartans would take all three doubles match ups, with
Matthew Gittings and
Camron Cohen putting up the toughest fight at No. 3. The duo was tied with Case's Anthony Kanam and Rob Stroup 7-7, but fell in the tie breaker 7-2 to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
In the second flight of doubles, Gruppuso and
Zachary Vaughn put up a battle versus Aaron Umen and Chaitanya Aduru. Unfortunately they would end up on the wrong end of the 8-6 count.
The loss against the high powered Spartans makes the Yeomen 8-11 overall, but they finished 3-1 in NCAC East.
Oberlin will look to continue its strong play at the NCAC Championships next weekend in Indianapolis. The tournament starts on Friday, with a champion being crowned next Sunday.
