Oberlin, Ohio – After getting beaten up 21-7 in game one, the Oberlin College baseball team regrouped to win the nightcap, 8-3, over the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Dill Field.
Senior right-hander
Ian Dinsmore stymied the Tigers' bats in game two as he tossed 6.2 innings, scattering five hits and four walks as he allowed just one run en route to running his record to 4-1.
At the plate,
Lawrence Hamilton and
Ben Reed led the Yeomen's 10-hit effort with a pair of base-knocks in the game.
The Yeomen posted the game's first run in the bottom of the first as freshman
Jacob Thompson lifted a ball deep down the right field line in foul ground to allow Mapes to score on the sacrifice fly.
It remained just a 1-0 Oberlin cushion until the home half of the fifth. Reed started the inning with a hustle double to the gap in right center and would score on a Tigers' error. Mapes would later follow with a double of his own to plate
Jack Derwin to make it a 3-0 Yeomen advantage.
The Tigers would scratch out a solo tally in the sixth but the Yeomen would get that run right back in the bottom of the frame as
Connor MacDowell delivered a pinch hit sac fly.
With a 4-1 lead in hand, senior
Noah Gear would come in with two outs in the seventh in relief of Dinsmore and got the final out of the frame and would go on to finish the game on the bump to record his second save of the season.
Oberlin would tack on pair of insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to leave little doubt in the eventual outcome. In the seventh, the Yeomen deuce came on one swing of the bat as Hamilton belted an opposite-field two-run home run over the wall in right. In the eighth, Reed had a run-scoring single back up the box and rookie
Nick Nelson also rapped a run-producing double.
The Tigers would push two runs across in the ninth but Gear was able to get through the final frame before any real damage was done.
A misplay in the first inning set the tone for how game one turned out for the Yeomen. The Tigers scored in every inning, enforcing the conference run rule after seven innings.
The Yeomen offense finally came to life in the seventh as they erupted for seven runs in the inning. The rally featured the first-career hit and RBI for freshman
Drew Packs and a grand slam from
Jack Marsjanik, which marked his first-career home run. Derwin and
Parker Goldstein also drew bases-loaded walks in the frame.
Oberlin is now 12-11 on the year and 4-4 in the NCAC. The Tigers head home at 14-9 and 5-3 in league play.
The Yeomen are back in action on Tuesday afternoon as they host The College of Wooster Fighting Scots with game one starting at noon.
