Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's and women's track & field teams return key contributors across multiple events as they look to build upon an impressive 2018-2019 season.
The Yeowomen are the three-time defending North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor and Outdoor champions and return two women who competed in the NCAA Championships a season ago.
Sophomore
Sarah Voit is back after a historical rookie season that saw her earn All-American honors after placing sixth in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The Cincinnati, Ohio native won the NCAC Championship in pole vault at both the indoor and outdoor championships along with being named Great Lakes All-Region in both seasons.
"Sarah is one of the best vaulters in the nation and is only getting better, faster, and stronger heading into her sophomore season," Head Coach
Ray Appenheimer said.
Senior
Oona Jung-Beeman qualified for outdoor nationals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last season and will be dangerous from 800 to 3,000 meters as she is coming off an all-conference and all-region cross country season. Fellow senior
Maya English returns as the conference champion in the weight throw, while
Christine Impara was all-conference in 2019 in the heptathlon outdoors and should compete for conference titles in both the indoor and outdoor combined events.
Seniors
Naeisha McClain,
Jasmine Keegan, and
Cecelia Longo, along with sophomore
Victoria Blair join English to makeup one of the most talented throwing units in the country. McClain, who won the NCAC indoor shot put crown a year ago, is hoping to bookend her career with a nationals bid. Keegan, who earned all-region honors in the weight throw in 2019, has been a jack-of-all-trades throughout her Oberlin tenure with multiple all-conference performances across an array of events, while Longo has been a consistent point producer as well. Blair bust onto the scene last year, earning All-NCAC accolades in the shot put both in indoors (2
nd) and outdoors (3
rd).
The Yeomen finished fourth out of nine teams at both the NCAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 2019 and will look to repeat as conference champions in the 4x400 and 4x200 meter relays.
Adriano Atallah, who was a member of the 4x200 relay team, returns for his junior season and should compete for conference championships in the short sprints and combined events. Both
Victor Salcido and
Malachi Clemons were apart of those championship relay teams and are determined to defend those titles in 2020. Sophomore
Kofi Asare is coming off a rookie season that saw him earn all-conference honors in the triple jump and while sophomore
Kenny Schafer is moving up to the 3,000 meters in the indoor season after an all-conference cross country performance in the fall.
Junior
Cameron MacIntyre is striving to take the next step in the combined events as he pushes for all-conference status after finishing fifth in indoors and outdoors a season ago.
"Of course, our goal is to vie for conference championships, school records, and NCAA Championships appearances," Appenheimer noted. "However, it is equally important that we support and challenge each other every day in order to create the best community possible. By being the best team we can day in and day out, we will be able to accomplish our goals for the season."
This year's schedule is a balanced one that is designed to meet the needs of the entire team. There are plenty of opportunities for individuals to hit national qualifying marks against top competition while also providing opportunities for growth and development so that others can break personal-bests and hit conference-qualifying marks.
Oberlin begins its season this Saturday, December 7 at Case Western Reserve at 10:00 a.m. with its first home meet coming on January 10 when they host the Dan Kinsey Invitational.
Oberlin will host the NCAC Indoor Combined Events on February 22-23 before heading to Denison for the NCAC Indoor Championships on February 28-29. Oberlin will also host the NCAC Combined Outdoor Events on April 25-26 before being the site for the NCAC Outdoor Championships on May 1-2.
