Alma, Michigan – The Oberlin College women's basketball team held a one-point advantage at the half but went cold from the floor in the second, leading to a 60-44 defeat to the Alma College Scots on Saturday afternoon.
An
Ally Driscoll layup with just over one minute remaining in the opening quarter put the Yeowomen ahead 16-15 after the first 15 minutes of play.
Maggie Gross hit a jumper to give her team an 18-15 advantage at the 5:55 mark of the second quarter but the teams would trade points until halftime as a Scots layup with 63 seconds remaining gave Oberlin a slight 23-22 lead at halftime.
Mackenzie Michaels scored the first points of the quarter less than a minute in to make it 25-22 but the Scots countered with a 12-4 run to take a 34-29 advantage and force a Yeowomen timeout halfway through the quarter.
An Alma three-pointer pushed the margin to double digits at 40-29 with 1:28 left in the third before a
Jasmine Sorrells layup with four seconds left got it back to single digits at 42-33 Scots heading to the fourth quarter.
The Scots opened the fourth firing as it stretched the lead to 50-35 at the 6:06 mark as Oberlin only got as close as 10 in the final quarter after a
Tyler Collins jumper with 1:15 remaining in the contest.
It was a tale of two halves for the Yeowomen as they were outscored 38-21 in the second half after holding a one-point lead at the break.
Sorrells was the lone scorer in double figures with 11 points as she also pulled down 13 rebounds to register a double-double.
Cheyenne Arthur and
Sammy Spanier combined for 16 points from the guard positions for the Yeowomen as they added eight points apiece.
Oberlin heads to Wooster for the Nan Nichols Classic next weekend with its first game on Saturday, November 16
th versus Mount Union at 1:00 p.m.
