Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Yeowomen Past Bishops

Oberlin, Ohio — A big fourth quarter by the Oberlin College women's basketball team lifted them past the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops, 53-43, on Wednesday evening.

Trailing by one, the Yeowomen used a 10-4 run to secure its first two-score advantage in the game on an Alex Stipano three making it 44-39 at the 5:29 mark of the fourth quarter. From there Oberlin would extend its lead out 12, and its stingy defensive play held the Bishops to just four points the rest of the period.

Overall Oberlin was led by Stipano who scored 10 of her 16 points in the fourth. The senior captain connected on 44.4 percent (4-of-9) of her shots from 3-point land.  Maggie Gross was the other Yeowoman in double figures as she finished with 11 points (5-of-10). On the other side of the floor, Olivia Canning rejected six shots in the contest and finished with eight points.

In the first quarter the Bishops controlled the pace of play with their aggressive defense. Ohio Wesleyan built its lead up to nine, when Elea Karras finished at the rim with 1:35 left in the period. Tyler Collins drove through the lane to finishing off the scoring on the following possession to make it a 19-12 Battling Bishops lead at the end of the first.

The Yeowomen defense held Ohio Wesleyan to just four points in the second quarter, allowing them to tie the game at the intermission. Jasmine Sorrells scored the he final points of the half on the following possession that evened the game at 23-23.

The third quarter was nip-and-tuck the whole way, with neither team able to create much separation. An old fashion three-point play by Gross gave the Yeowomen their first lead of the game at the 5:35 on the clock, but ultimately Ohio Wesleyan carried a 35-34 cushion into the fourth quarter.

Overall Oberlin shot 33.9 percent (21-of-62) and dominated the boards by a 43-35 margin. The Battling Bishops hit on 17-of-56 from the field (30.4 percent), and were 0-11 from three.

The Yeowomen finish the month of January 7-2 running their conference record to 7-4 and overall record to 12-8. The Bishops are 9-9 on the year and 5-6 against NCAC opponents.

Oberlin looks to keep its hot stretch alive on the road against the Denison University Big Red on Saturday afternoon. The opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
