Yeomen Fall Twice to No. 2 Wooster

Wooster, Ohio – The high-powered College of Wooster Fighting Scots lived up to their No. 2 national ranking as they cruised past the Oberlin College Yeomen 17-4 and 18-2 (8 inn.) on Wednesday afternoon.

Oberlin catcher Brendan Mapes had three hits on the day to extend his hitting streak to five straight games.  Furthermore, the Mount Vernon, Ohio, native has hit safely in 13 out of the last 14 games.

Oberlin pitching limited the Scots to just 12 hits in game one, but their defense let them down with four errors. However, the Scots' bats didn't stay as quiet in the nightcap as they touched up the Yeomen hurlers for 23 hits in the game. Oberlin registered eight hits in each contest.

The Scots opened the game-one scoring in the bottom of the second as Drew Tornow lifted a Sean Kiley pitch over the wall in right field for a two-run home run. However, the Yeomen answered right back in the top of the third, scoring four runs in the inning to take the lead.

Jack McGowan led off the Oberlin rally with a double to the gap in left center and would later score on a single to center by Ian Dinsmore. Just two pitches later, the Yeomen would find themselves in the lead as Milo Sklar belted a two-run home run to left field for his third round-tripper of the season. The fun continued as freshman Lawrence Hamilton stepped up to the plate and rapped the eighth pitch he saw down the left field line for a clutch two-out RBI double that scored senior Quin Butler.

Unfortunately, Oberlin's bats would go into hibernation the rest of the way as they produced just three hits for the remainder of the game while Wooster mounted its comeback.

The Scots would use three hits and an error to score four runs in the home-half of the fourth before tacking on one more in the fifth. The Wooster sixth started with a double and two walks to chase Kiley from the game, but the Oberlin bullpen didn't fare any better as the Scots posted six runs in the inning to effectively put the game away for good with a 13-4 lead in hand when the frame mercifully came to an end.

Kiley (1-7) suffered his seventh loss of the season as he allowed seven hits and four walks in 5-plus innings of work that saw him throw 104 pitches. The Studio City, California, native did strikeout three, but had 10 runs charged to his line, seven of which were earned.

Dinsmore and Hamilton led Oberlin at the plate with two hits each.

The Scots picked up right where they left off to start game two, scoring six runs over the first two innings to build a healthy cushion.

The Yeomen scratched out single tallies in the second and third innings for their lone runs of the game. McGowan had an RBI groundout that plated Oberlin's first run, while Mapes drove in Sklar from second with a two-out opposite-field single to right field in the third.

Sklar got the start on the bump but lasted just four innings as the Scots touched him up for 12 hits and seven earned runs as he fell to back to 2-2.

After Sklar's departure, the Scots continued to find holes in Oberlin's exotic shifting defense as they scored 11 runs over the next two innings to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.

Sklar, Mapes, and Hamilton each had two hits to lead the Yeomen at the dish.

The Yeomen dropped back to 9-19 overall and 2-8 in the NCAC, while Wooster moved to 22-3 overall and 10-0 in league play to extend its winning streak to 17 straight games.

Oberlin returns home to host Wabash College on Saturday afternoon. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
