Yeowomen Fall to Purple Raiders

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team fell to the visiting University of Mount Union Purple Raiders, 13-7, on Wednesday night at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Mount Union invaded Bailey Field leading the country in goals per game (22.86) and the Yeowomen did all they could to keep them in check as sophomore goalie Siena Marcelle stood tall in goal, making a career-high 16 saves en route to holding the Purple Raiders to a season-low 13 goals. However, the Purple Raiders' defense was equally impressive in containing the Oberlin attack, forcing a season-high 36 Yeowomen turnovers while holding them to just 14 clears on 25 chances.

Eliza Amber led the Yeowomen offense as she matched a career-high with four goals, while Hayley Drapkin and Kyra Aviles each added a goal and an assist in the setback.

It appeared that Oberlin struck first at the 18:06 mark of the first half as Sydney Garvis sliced her way through the stingy backline of the Purple Raiders only to have her goal waived off due to an illegal stick. Less than a minute later the Purple Raiders would get the game's first official goal as Danielle Rohrman cashed in a free-position shot.

Mount Union led 2-0, but the Yeowomen would cut the lead in half as Aviles netted her seventh goal of the season with the help of a Drapkin feed.

The Purple Raiders, who entered the game second in the nation in scoring defense (3.43 gpg), put their skills on display throughout the opening half, pestering Oberlin's normally high-powered front line.

Amber, who had three first-half shots, had a promising scoring opportunity at the 18:06 mark hit the post, while goalie Mimi Curtis turned away five other shots, including three free-position attempts.

Oberlin ultimately trailed 5-1 at the intermission but scored the first two goals of the second half to get right back into the match. After her near score in the first half, Amber would cut across the crease on an 8-meter attempt. Less than a minute later, Natalie Rauchle deposited her team-leading 34th goal of the season as she escaped free from her game-long marker to finish off a feed from Aviles.

Mount Union would answer back with three consecutive scores, but Drapkin would stop the run by sending her shot into the top portion of the cage to cut the Mount Union lead in half at 8-4 with just under 23 minutes left to play.

Two minutes later, Amber followed with her second score of the night to cut the lead down to three at 8-5. Following a Britt Klosterman goal, Amber would answer again to make it 9-6 with under 17 minutes to go, but the Purple Raiders would score four of the game's final five goals to secure the victory.

Mount Union had a 35-18 advantage in shots and ended with a 24-19 edge in ground balls, but Oberlin controlled the draw, 17-5, as Rauchle and Garvis each corralled six.

It was a physical affair on both sides as the game featured nine yellow cards with six going against the Yeowomen.

The Yeowomen are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Heidelberg University to Bailey Field. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
