Wilmington, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team earned its first sweep of the season, defeating Wilmington College by the scores of 10-1 and 12-3 on a cold Sunday afternoon.
The Yeomen out-hit the Quakers 30-7 on the day with eight doubles, two home runs and 21 RBIs. Oberlin pitching was equally as impressive, allowing just two earned runs while holding the Quakers to a .117 team batting average.
In the lid-lifter, junior southpaw
Zachary Steer baffled the Quaker hitters for six scoreless innings that saw him allow just two hits and two walks to accompany his three strikeouts as he moved to 3-0 on the year.
Musa Matiwane,
David Gaetano, and
Stephen Kellner each worked a hitless inning out of the bullpen.
The Yeomen pounded out 14 hits in game one as
Jack McGowan and
Sam Harris led the way with three each as they also combined for three doubles.
Oberlin led 6-0 after three innings, plating four runs in the second and two in the third. Senior
Milo Sklar rapped a two-out three-run double to right center and would come around to score on a double by
Maxx McGee. McGowan had a run-producing double in the third, while junior
Ian Dinsmore added a sac fly to center.
The Yeomen would go on to post single tallies in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Quin Butler had an RBI groundout in the fourth and
Brendan Mapes belted his second home run of the season over the wall in left in the sixth. The final Oberlin run came courtesy of Harris as dropped in an RBI double to score McGowan.
Sklar started game two with his second lead-off home run of the season to stake the Yeomen to an early lead. The Quakers would get that tally back in the home half of the first, but Oberlin would score five runs over the next three innings to take control of the game.
First-year
Lawrence Hamilton smacked a two-RBI single in the second and Butler had an RBI fielder's choice in the third. Back-to-back two-out singles by Sklar and McGee plated a pair of runs in the fourth to make it a 5-2 Oberlin advantage.
The Yeomen would use four hits and a Wilmington error to break the game open with a four-run sixth. Sklar, who had seven RBIs on the day, had a two-run double in the inning.
The final Oberlin runs came courtesy of
Jack Marsjanik as he belted a two-run single back up the box in the ninth.
Noah Gear (3-0) worked the front four innings on the mound and was credited with the win after allowing three hits, two runs, and two walks.
Jack Reiss,
Alexander Amorello, and
Bradley Jamison each threw a scoreless inning, while
Sean Kiley gave up one hit and one unearned run in two innings of relief.
The sweep moved the Yeomen's record to 7-11 while the Quakers fell back to 8-11.
