NCAC Tournament Bracket (PDF)
Greencastle, IN – The Oberlin College women's basketball team gave No. 7 DePauw all it could handle, but in the end the home Tigers were able to earn a 66-56 win over the Yeowomen in the regular-season finale for both schools.
The game featured 15 lead changes and four ties along the way in what may have been a preview of the NCAC Championship game next Saturday. The Yeowomen (18-6), who saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end, will enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed after losing a tiebreaker to Kenyon College as it finished the league slate at 13-3.
Junior
Olivia Canning led the Oberlin offense with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting and a 6-of-8 showing at the free throw line. Senior
Abby Andrews added 10 points, while
Alex Stipano,
Tyler Parlor, and
Jasmine Sorrells each chipped in with eight points.
Oberlin got off to a quick start, grabbing an 8-2 lead just 3:28 into the contest. Back-to-back layups from Sorrells gave the Yeowomen a 14-9 edge late in the opening period and Oberlin would ultimately carry a 16-12 advantage into the second quarter.
It was a seesaw affair throughout the second quarter as it saw the lead change hands six times. Maya Howard, who led all scorers with 24 points, gave the Tigers a one-point edge with a 3-pointer, but with 5:55 left in the half Oberlin found itself back out in front, 24-21, following a layup from Andrews. DePauw responded with a 6-0 response run, and a late basket from Claire Keefe gave the Tigers a 29-27 cushion at the break.
Oberlin started the third quarter with a 10-3 run that featured six points from Andrews to claim a 37-32 advantage. The Yeowomen led 44-42 with 46 seconds left in the session, but Howard closed the frame with a personal 5-0 spurt to put her side ahead, 47-44.
It took over two minutes of play for either team to put one through the hoop in the fourth, and unfortunately it was the Tigers who broke through first as they increased the lead out to seven, 51-44, with 7:15 left to play.
A layup from
Ally Driscoll had the Yeowomen gap down to just four at 54-50 with 3:43 still to expire, but Oberlin would go scoreless for over two minutes as the Tigers pulled away to build their lead up to 10 and leave no doubt in the outcome.
Oberlin shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the floor, but came up empty from long range, finishing 0-of-9 from beyond the arc. However, the Yeowomen did have a 42-16 differential in points in the paint. DePauw finished the game at a 46.2 percent clip with 24 makes on 52 shots.
The Tigers, who ended the regular season 24-1 and 16-0 in the NCAC, will enter the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed and take on No. 8 Allegheny
Oberlin will host the sixth-seeded Denison Big Red on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Students in attendance will be treated to free Dave's Cosmic Subs and special limited-edition Squirrel's Nest t-shirts will also be given out while supplies last.
