Greencastle, IN – The 23
rd ranked Tigers of DePauw got off to a fast start and never looked back as they defeated the Oberlin College women's basketball team 66-37 on Saturday afternoon at Neal Fieldhouse.
Senior
Alex Stipano led the Yeowomen with 17 points as she cashed in four of her six triple-tries in the game. Junior
Jasmine Sorrells impressed off the bench as she stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and seven blocked shots in 25 minutes of work.
The Yeowomen struggled to get anything started as they missed four shots and had four turnovers in the early minutes of the first quarter allowing the Tigers to open up an 11-0 lead. Stipano would try her best to keep Oberlin in the game, scoring all nine of the team's points in the first quarter but DePauw still led by 10 after one 10-minute period.
The second quarter was much more closely contested but the Tigers still outscored the Yeowomen by four points in the frame. Another three from Stipano had the margin down to 26-16 with 4:36 left in the half but the Yeowomen would muster just five more points the rest of the session as DePauw carried a 35-21 lead into the intermission.
Oberlin would never threaten a comeback as the Tigers ballooned the lead to over 20 points in the third quarter and would continue to widen the margin the rest of the way.
Oberlin shot a season-low 21.5 percent, hitting on just 14-of-65 shot attempts, which included a 4-of-17 showing from beyond the arc. The Tigers, who were led by Sydney Kopp's 14 points, had four of their five starters in double figures while shooting 40.7 percent (22-of-54) from the floor.
The loss snapped the Yeowomen's three-game winning streak as they dropped to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC. DePauw improved to 6-2 and remained unblemished in the NCAC at 3-0.
Oberlin will have a quick turnaround as they come home to host Denison University on Monday night. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
