Women’s Basketball Falls at Otterbein

Westerville, Ohio — The Oberlin College women's basketball team fell to the Otterbein University Cardinals, 64-44, on the final day of the Smokey Ballenger Classic on Sunday afternoon. 

Despite the lopsided loss a bright spot was junior guard Ally Driscoll who ended the game with double figures for the second straight day. The Ellicott City, Maryland, native scored 12 points to lead the team, finishing the contest 4-of-9 from the field. Olivia Canning and Tyler Collins each scored six points in the loss for the crimson and gold.

The Cardinals led for almost the whole first half of play as they took advantage of 14 turnovers by the Yeowomen to build up a 31-18 advantage at halftime. A Cheyenne Arthur trey in the final minute of the session looked to cut the deficit to 11 before the horn, but Otterbein's Abby Scholtz would knock down a pair of free throw attempts with 36 seconds left. 

In the second half Otterbein ballooned its lead to 57-30 in the beginning of the fourth quarter, leaving the final outcome never in doubt. 

On the stat sheet the Cardinals made 40 percent (8-of-20) of its shots from beyond the arc and finished the day 21-of-55 from the field. The Yeowomen were 15-of-42 (35.7%) on the day and made just three of its 11 attempts from 3-point land. Oberlin did win the battle of the boards 34-25, but finished the night with 23 turnovers compared to just 11 for the Cardinals.  

Oberlin drops to 5-6 on the year, while the Cardinals improve to 6-5 overall. 

The Yeowomen will look to snap their four-game skid on Wednesday when they go to Ohio Wesleyan University to take on the Battling Bishops at 3 p.m.
