Yeowomen Roll Over Hornets

Kalamazoo, MI – The Oberlin College women's basketball team cruised to their fourth win of the season, knocking off the Kalamazoo College Hornets 71-26 on Saturday afternoon.

It was a career day for sophomore forward Tyler Collins as she spearheaded the Yeowomen charge with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Jasmine Sorrells also dominated the inside with a career-high 19 points to accompany her seven rebounds and four blocks in just 21 minutes of work off the bench.

The senior captain duo of Alex Stipano (14/5) and Olivia Canning (8/8) combined for 22 points and 13 rebounds in the win.

The Yeowomen's stifling defense held the Hornets to under 15 percent shooting as they connected on just 10 of 67 field goal tries in the contest and failed to reach double figures in three of the four quarters.

A 17-4 first quarter for the Yeowomen set the tone early and Oberlin would never relinquish a double-digit lead the rest of the way. A layup by Collins at the 4:02 mark of the second quarter ballooned the Oberlin advantage out to 18 at 27-9 and the Yeowomen would ultimately carry a 31-15 lead into the intermission.

A triple-hit by Stipano midway through the third gave Oberlin its first 20-point margin of the afternoon at 40-19. In the fourth quarter, it would only get worse for the Hornets as Oberlin shot a blistering 80 percent (12-of-15) in the period while K'Zoo made just one of 17 shots from the floor.

Oberlin shot 47.6 (30-of-63) percent in the game and finished with a 55-35 edge on the glass. The win ran Oberlin's record to 4-2 on the year and marked its first set of back-to-back wins on the young season. The Hornets are still in search of their first win as they dropped back to 0-5.

The Yeowomen will be back in action on Wednesday night when they open conference play against Kenyon College at Philips Gym at 6 p.m. The 2018 NCAC Championship team will also be honored at halftime of the men's game against the Lords, which is slated for an 8 p.m. start.
