Marietta, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team went swing-for-swing with perennial nation power Marietta College, winning game one in 10 innings 8-7 before falling in the nightcap 5-2.
The Yeomen head home ahead of their big weekend series with Allegheny at 17-16 and winners of seven of their last eight games. The Pioneers, who sit in second place in the Ohio Athletic Conference, are now 18-14 and remain 11-3 in the OAC.
In game one, the Yeomen trailed 4-0 after two innings, but the margin quickly evaporated with a five-run third as they went out in front by one using five hits and three Pioneer errors in the inning. Following an RBI single by
Ian Dinsmore, a bunt single by
Justin Cruz loaded the bases for
Brendan Mapes who sent a run-scoring single through the left side to cut the deficit in half at 4-2.
The sloppiness for the Pioneers continued as a wild pitch allowed the third run to come across and then
Quin Butler would tie the game with an infield single to plate Cruz. With two-away, a 1
st-and-3rd double steal worked to perfection as Pioneers' catcher Eric White uncorked a wild through to allow Mapes to walk home.
Marietta would respond with a pair in the home-half of third to regain the lead, but the Yeomen would get right back to even at 6-6, posting a single tally in the top of the fourth. Rookie
Amari Newman started the frame with a double down the left field line and would later trade places with Cruz as he rapped a two-out RBI double to center.
Later trailing 7-6, the Yeomen would again find the equalizer in the eighth as
Ian Dinsmore came through with a clutch two-out opposite-field single to right to plate
Milo Sklar.
Sklar's work was not done as he went to mound in the ninth with the goal of sending the game to extra innings. He did just that, pitching around two singles to start the frame.
The Brooklyn, New York, native would aid his own cause as he led off the top of the 10
th with a double and would come around to score what proved to be the game-winning run on
Mike Masella's single through the right side.
In the bottom of the 10
th the first Marietta hitter would reach, but Sklar would sit down the next three in order to secure his first win of the season.
The Yeomen belted out 15 hits in the game with Newman and Butler leading the way with three each. Butler, who also had a hit in game two, extended his hitting streak to seven games.
In relief of starter
Musa Matiwane, who allowed six runs (five earned) in 2.2 innings, the bullpen bunch of
Ben Lovett,
Joe Greenberg,
Nicholas Morgan,
Charlie Goetz, and Sklar combined to give up one run on six hits and a walk over 7.1 innings.
The Yeomen managed just five hits in the backend of the doubleheader, as they could not generate enough offense to complete the sweep. Oberlin used 10 position players and seven pitchers in the setback.
Oberlin did strike first, posting a single tally in to the top of the first as Mapes and Carney delivered back-to-back two-out doubles to score the game's first run.
Unfortunately, the Yeomen lead was short-lived as the Pioneers answered back with a pair in the bottom of the frame and would never trail again.
Oberlin starter
Jack Reiss lasted just three innings, getting tagged for all five runs (four earned) while allowing five hits. He did strike out three and walked none as he fell back to 1-2 on the year.
The Pioneers took a 5-1 lead with three in the third and allowed just one more Oberlin run the rest of the way. Sophomore
Connor MacDowell started the fifth with a single back up the box and would later score on a groundout by
Sam Harris.
The Yeomen bullpen impressed in game two as well as
Jack Brewster (1.0),
Stephen Kellner (1.0),
Ian Schmitzerle (1.0),
Bradley Jamison (0.2),
Alexander Amorello (0.1),
Jack McGowan (0.1), and
Noah Lipshie (0.1) combined to work five innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits and two walks.
Oberlin will honor its eight senior members prior to first pitch of Saturday's doubleheader with Allegheny. The ceremony will start at approximately 11:45 a.m. with game one of the four-game set to follow at noon.
