Gambier, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team withstood a late Kenyon charge to outlast the Ladies, 11-9, on Saturday afternoon.
An eight-meter goal from
Natalie Rauchle with just under 21 minutes left to play gave the Yeowomen a 10-5 lead, but Kenyon wouldn't go away quietly, getting within two goals on two separation occasions down the stretch.
A free-position finish from Cassie Hudson-Heck had the Ladies' deficit down to two with 5:30 left to play, but Oberlin allowed just one more shot the rest of the way, which ended up as the 13
th save of the game for senior goalie
Alexa L'Insalata.
The Yeowomen attack was ignited by
Maggie Mullard who posted five goals for the second time in the last three games.
Eliza Amber and Rauchle each added a pair in the win.
The game was nip-and-tuck throughout as Lucy Somers finished off a Hudson-Heck feed to tie the game at 3-3 with 17:51 left in the opening half. However, the Yeowomen would respond with four straight goals to create some separation. Sophomore
Hayley Drapkin cashed in a free-position attempt, and Mullard, Amber, and Rauchle would each find the back of the net to make it 7-3 Oberlin at the intermission.
Oberlin's largest lead of the game came early in the second half as Mullard deposited a pass from Rauchle to make it 9-5. It was the second helper of the game for the Edina, Minnesota, product.
The Ladies fought back, but didn't have enough firepower to overtake the Yeowomen who moved to 10-1 on the season and 4-1 in the NCAC.
Oberlin finished with a 27-23 advantage in ground balls and finished with a slight 12-10 edge in draw controls. Senior
Sara Phister led the way with four of each in the win.
The Yeowomen return to action on Tuesday night as they travel south to Wittenberg University. The opening draw is set for 6 p.m.
