Hiram, Ohio – It was a disappointing day for the Oberlin College baseball team as the Yeomen dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Hiram College, falling 6-1 and 6-5 on Good Friday afternoon.
The Yeomen have now lost eight straight games, dropping back to 10-15 overall and more importantly are now just 1-5 in the NCAC East.
The Terriers got the lead early in game one, posting a single tally in each of the first two innings off junior right hander
Sean Kiley who has now lost three straight decisions to go to 3-3 on the season.
It was Bryan Engdahl's RBI single through the left side that plated the game's first run before Vito Petrillo would make it 2-0 in the second with a two-out RBI single back up the middle.
Kiley would settle in and post zeros on the scoreboard over the next four innings to keep the Yeomen right in the game. Oberlin would get its lone run of the contest in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to center from
Justin Cruz that sent
Milo Sklar across the dish to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
However, the Terriers would break the game open with a four-run seventh with all the runs coming with two outs. Kiley sandwiched two of his six walks in-between a strikeout of Brian Fryda and a fly out of Petrillo. Alex Perrella would then get the rally rolling with a run-scoring single to center. Engdahl would follow with an RBI infield single and Tyler Duben drew a bases-loaded walk to chase Kiley from the game. Unfortunately, the Terriers still were not done as relief pitcher
Charlie Goetz proceeded to walk Brandon Chesmar with the bases juiced to allow the game's final run to come across.
Oberlin never threatened the outcome over the last two innings as the Yeomen had just five hits in the game. The Terriers' Hank Clegg had the Oberlin hitters stymied for eight innings as he struck out a career-high 10 against just three walks to move to 3-0 on the season.
Kiley was charged with all six Hiram runs in his 6.2 innings of work. He allowed just six hits and had five strikeouts. However, he was victimized by the six walks.
In the nightcap, the Yeomen out-hit the Terriers 11-3, but somehow still wound up on the wrong side of the scoreboard as they stranded 12 men on base in the game.
Hiram would get all six of its runs between the third and fourth innings and held on the rest of the way.
The Terriers' four-run third was put on a platter for them as sophomore starter
David Gaetano lost command of the strike zone after being perfect through the first two frames. Gaetano walked the bases loaded and Brandon Gros drove in the game's first run on a fielder's choice groundout. Engdahl would then follow with a run-scoring single to center. An Oberlin error would extend the inning even longer and the Terriers made them pay as Brandon Chesmar delivered a disheartening two-out two-RBI double to the gap in left center.
Oberlin would get a pair back in the top of the fourth as
Brendan Mapes start the inning by sending out his third home run of the season. Sklar doubled down the left field line and would later score on
Quin Butler's two-out double to left to register his 16th RBI of the season.
Unfortunately, Hiram would get both of those Oberlin runs right back on one swing of the bat as a Tyler Carcioppolo lifted a two-run home run over the fence in left center to make it 6-2 heading into the fifth.
The Yeomen kept battling, registering single tallies in each of the next three innings, but could never find a way to post a crooked number.
Sklar had an RBI groundout in the fifth and Cruz added a two-out run-scoring single up the middle in the sixth. However, the Yeomen had two on with nobody out in the inning, but managed just the one run. Mapes started the seventh with a double to right center and would later score on
Parker Goldstein's single through the left side to cut the Hiram lead down to one.
Grasping for the tying run, the Yeomnen had two on with one out in the eighth and came up empty. In the ninth, freshman
Maxx McGee delivered a pinch hit single and
Quin Butler was then hit by a pitch to put the game-tying – and go-ahead runs aboard. In the end it was all for naught though as Carcioppolo induced a groundout to end the game and secure his third save of the season.
After a rocky patch in the middle innings, Gaetano settled in as he went all eight innings, throwing 116 pitches (73 strikes). He struck out five and walked five as he fell back to 1-5 on the season.
Mapes led Oberlin at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, and two runs scored. Goldstein and
Ian Dinsmore each had two hits in the setback.
The Yeomen and Terriers will complete the series tomorrow afternoon with another doubleheader from Fishel Field. First pitch of game one is set for noon.
