Alliance, Ohio — The Oberlin College women's basketball team fell to the University of Mount Union by a score of 65-44 in its season opener inside the McPhearson Academic and Athletic Complex.
Junior center Olivia Canning started the year with her 10th career double-double as she posted 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Sudbury, Massachusetts, native shot 50 percent from the field (4-8). Along with Canning, sophomore Ally Driscoll scored a career and team-high 14 points in 25 minutes off the bench.
After Abby Andrews finished a layup on Oberlin's opening possession, the Purple Raiders would go on a 11-2 run giving them an 11-4 lead with 3:23 left in the first quarter. The Yeowomen fought their way back and made it an one score game when first-year guard Leo Ross knocked down a three to make it 11-8 with 1:31 on the clock. A late run by Mount Union would give the Raiders a 18-10 lead at the first intermission.
Oberlin cut the Raiders lead to 18-16 with a pair of threes from Ross and Driscoll in the opening two minutes of the second quarter. Mount Union answered the short Yeowomen spurt with a 16-3 response over the remainder of the half as they held a comfortable 34-19 cushion at the break.
The Purple Raiders outscored the Yeowomen 15-9 in the third period and earned its largest lead of the game when Casey Morrissette hit a jumper to put Mount Union up 47-23 at the 2:38 mark. Driscoll led the offensive attack with her three points in the period and Oberlin would cut the Purple Raiders lead to 49-28 before the end of the third.
Mount Union scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter extending its lead to 31 with 8:01 left in the final period. The Yeowomen made a late run in the final three minutes of play and cut down the Purple Raiders lead, but it would not make a difference in the outcome.
Oberlin forced 13 turnovers on opening night, but failed to convert on its opportunities only scoring eight points off of turnovers. Mount Union shot 37.5 percent from the field (24-64) and 25 percent from beyond the arc (7-28), while the Yeowomen finished the day shooting 24.2 percent from the field (16-66).
The Yeowomen look to rebound on Saturday as they take on Muskingum at 1 p.m.
