OBERLIN, Ohio - Despite a trio a Yeowomen finishing in double-figures on Wednesday night, the Oberlin College women's basketball team was outlasted by the Hiram College Terriers, 64-61.
Sophomore
Alex Stipano led the way with a career night against the hounds from Hiram, notching a career-high in scoring with 24 points on 8-of-18 (44.4%) shooting, with five three-pointers made, another career-high mark. Stipano also served up two assists and hauled in a rebound in the loss.
Junior
Tyler Parlor and
Abby Andrews completed the trio of Yeowomen to finish in double-figures in the midweek tilt. Parlor struck for 10 points on 4-of-11 (36.6%) shooting and pulled down 14 rebounds to post her third double-double of the campaign and seventh of her career.
Andrews finished in double-figures for the fourth time in five games with 11 points on a 4-of-7 performance from the field. The Ann Arbor, Michigan, native, nearly earned a double-double herself with eight rebounds to go along with two assists and two blocks.
Olivia Canning led the Crimson and Gold in rejections with five, marking the fifth game of the season the Sudbury, Massachusetts native earned at least five blocks. Canning posted six points (2-of-8; 25%) and eight rebounds before fouling out in the late minutes of the fourth quarter.
It was a back and forth affair inside of an electrifying Philips Gymnasium on Wednesday night with two lead changes and five deadlocks throughout the 40-minute battle.
The Yeowomen grabbed a 6-2 lead in the opening minutes of the ball-game and maintained their advantage through the quarter. Oberlin led 18-11 to start the second quarter, courtesy of a jumper from Stipano to close the first. The Yeowomen kept their foot on the gas and extended the advantage before the half. A pair of converted free throws from Andrews made it a 12-point game in favor of Oberlin with 3:38 left in the half. The Terriers dialed back their deficit to eight with a 4-0 run in the closing minutes to trail, 29-21 at the break.
Oberlin would lead for the entire third quarter, but the Terriers refused to go quietly. Hiram kept the deficit at single digits and eventually drew the game back even, 41-41 with 38-second left in the quarter. Oberlin answered with a pair of Parlor free throws to close the frame with a two-point advantage.
The two sides traded free throws and three-pointers for the opening five minutes of the final stanza. After a good layup from the Terriers' Dana Perrotta cut the Oberlin advantage to one, a misfired jumper from Parlor led to Hiram seizing the lead on the ensuing possession. A pair of free throw from Hiram's Kayla Yost put the Terriers in front for the first time since the opening second of the bout.
Oberlin's one-point deficit, 52-51, at the 3:13 mark would only be extended by a tenacious comeback surge from Hiram. The play intensified in the closing minutes. Yost pushed the Oberlin deficit to three, 54-51, before a suspect technical foul called against Oberlin led to the Terriers shooting four free throws, all of which were successfully converted. Down seven, Stipano drew life back into the Yeowomen with a big three-ball. Another Hiram bucket led to another three from Stipan, but the Terriers answered on the ensuing possession.
Trailing by three, Stipano toed the charity stripe following a Hiram foul and cut the deficit to one by making both free-throw attempts. Another duo of Hiram free throws put the Yeowomen behind by three once more with 11-seconds remaining.
The Crimson and Gold drove down the court, set up the offense brilliantly and gave Stipano an open look from beyond the arc. With a smooth release, the ball floated toward the basket and rattled the rim, nearly falling threw and sending the match to overtime, but it didn't fall for the second-year Alexandria, Virginia native.
The loss drops the Yeowomen to 4-8 overall and 3-2 in North Coast Athletic Conference action.
The Yeowomen will look to rebound on Saturday afternoon as they host the Wittenberg University Tigers and continue the NCAC stretch.
Tipoff from inside of Philips Gymnasium on Saturday, January 7 is slated for 1 p.m. with the men's game against Wabash to follow at 3 p.m.
