Yeomen Take Series From Hiram with a Split on Tuesday

Series Stats vs. Hiram (4 Games)

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team settled for its third consecutive split in North Coast Athletic Conference East Division play, dropping game one to the Hiram College Terriers 4-2 before rebounding with a 6-3 win game two.

However, with the Yeomen winning the first two against the Terriers nearly a week ago, Oberlin still won the series three games to one to move its conference record to 5-3 and overall mark to 13-14. Hiram is now 6-20 and 3-9 in league action.

Senior right-hander Harrison Wollman was sharp on the bump in the nightcap as he went six strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits. He walked none, struck out three and threw 51 strikes on 87 pitches to run his record to 2-2.

Sophomore Milo Sklar worked the final three innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks, but it did not matter as he still secured his fourth save of the season.

The first four hitters in the Yeomen lineup accounted for nine of their 12 hits and four RBI. Senior Blaise Dolcemaschio led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, while Justin Cruz, Ian Dinsmore and Sam Harris each had two hits.

The lone Hiram run off of Wollman came in the top of the first as he hit leadoff man Bryan Engdahl who would then score on Phil Ward's single to left. However, the Yeomen would get one back in the bottom of the frame as Harris scored from third while Dinsmore got tagged out in a run-down between first and second.

The Yeomen would make it a 2-1 game in the home-half of the second as sophomore Jack Brewster came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to left to score Jake Reynolds.

Cruz jumpstarted a two-out rally in the fifth, getting aboard via an infield single and then stealing second. Harris would not leave the Yeomen junior stranded as he lifted a 3-2 pitch to left field on the eighth pitch of the at-bat to give the Yeomen a two-run cushion.

The bottom of the seventh started with Hiram pitching throwing 10 straight balls and then a sac bunt from Harris moved two runners into scoring position. Dinsmore and Dolcemaschio would follow with run-scoring singles to make it a 5-1 game.

The Terriers touched up Sklar for two runs on three hits in the eighth, but he would fan Riley Harpster to end the inning and leave a pair stranded on base.

Oberlin added a single tally in the eighth to cap the game's scoring as Cruz sent Mike Masella across the dish with a two-out RBI single through the left side.

In game one the Yeomen posted two runs in the first inning and then went silent the rest of the way as the Terriers battled back against starter Kyle Dominy as he suffered his second loss of the season to drop to 2-2.

Cruz led off the game by rapping the second pitch he saw to the gap in left center for a double and he would score a single by freshman Brendan Mapes. Reynolds would later send Harris home on an infield single. However, the damage could have been worse, but Hiram southpaw Brandon Chesmar induced an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.

Dominy cruised through the front three innings before running into some trouble in the fourth. A single and a walk put two men on and after getting ahead of Zayvier Cintron 1-2, the Terrier third baseman had a hard-hit single through the left side to tie the game.

Dominy ultimately left in the top of the fifth after allowing a single and double to start the inning. Nicholas Morgan came on and registered a big strike out and then the Yeomen intentionally walked Trevor Foster to load the bases with one out. The plan should have worked perfect as Brandon Gros lifted a high fly ball into shallow right field, but John Evans slipped on the play – allowing the ball to drop and a run to score.  Morgan did get the next Hiram hitter to ground out for what should have been the final out of the inning with no runs coming across, but instead it was the second putout and another run was put on the board.

Trailing 4-2, the Yeomen bullpen continued its effectiveness as the Ben Lovett, David Gaetano and Charlie Goetz followed Morgan's efforts by not allowing a hit over the final two innings.

Chesmar departed after going six innings and sprinkling just six hits. He walked two and struck out two to move to 1-2 on the year.

He turned things over Ryan Fedor in the seventh and the Yeomen nearly walked-off against him for the second time in a week. After getting two quick outs, Fedor walked Harris and gave up a single to Dinsmore. He then walked Mapes to load the bases for Dolcemaschio. The left-handed hitter drove a ball on a 3-2 pitch deep down the left field line that Kyle Torok chased down to preserve the win for the Terriers. Had that ball gotten down Mapes would have scored all the way from first as he was running on the pitch.

The Yeomen will have a short turnaround as they will step out of conference and take on local rival Case Western Reserve tomorrow afternoon. Game one of the doubleheader from Nobby's Park is set for 12 p.m.
