Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen Unable to Corral Gators

Meadville, PA - The Oberlin College women's basketball team struggled to control the ball as the Allegheny College Gators pulled away for an easy 61-49 win over the Yeowomen on Wednesday night at the David V. Wise Center.

In the first battle back on January 23, the Gators took advantage of 24 Oberlin turnovers to win 62-58. Tonight, Oberlin had 22 miscues in the first half alone and finished with a season-high 35 for the game. As a result the Gators took 29 more shots than the Yeowomen while netting 25 points off the mistakes.

The loss marked the fifth in row for the Yeowomen as they are now 10-12 overall and 4-9 in the NCAC. Allegheny moved to 12-10 and 7-6 in the conference.

Lindsey Bernhardt led Oberlin with 12 points, while Olivia Canning and Tyler Parlor each added eight points. Abby Andrews, who scored 14 points in the first meeting, finished with just six on this night on 3-of-6 shooting.

Oberlin led 8-4 midway through the first period, but didn't score again until just seven minutes remained in the second quarter on a pair of Bernhardt free throws. The good news was the Gators led just 13-10 at that point in the game.

The Gators built up a nine-point lead, but the Yeowomen chipped away at the deficit by working the ball inside to their post players. A left-handed layup by Andrews got things going while Katie Lucaites followed with a layup of her own before Andrews capped the run with another bucket from in tight to cut the lead down to 23-21 with 2:29 left in the half.

However, Oberlin would once again fall out of rhythm as Allegheny closed the half on an 8-2 spurt to take a 31-23 lead into the intermission.

Oberlin scored the first six points of the third quarter to get within two, 31-29, with 7:48 to play in the frame, but the Gators closed the sessions with another big run to take a 43-32 advantage into the final period.

The Gators lead would only balloon over the final 10 minutes as Oberlin was never able get within single digits to threaten the final outcome.

Percentage wise neither team shot the basketball very effectively, but the Gators opportunities were plentiful compared to the Yeowomen. Allegheny finished at 36.1 percent (26-of-72), while Oberlin checked in at 41.9 percent (18-of-43).

The Yeowomen will look to end their skid on Saturday afternoon at Hiram College. Tip-time is set for 1 p.m.
