OBERLIN, Ohio - Senior
Briana Santiago struck for a career-high and nearly earned a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds to help guide Oberlin College women's basketball to a wire-to-wire, 68-47, win over Wooster.
Santiago, who made her-third career start in place of an injured Tyler Palor, also added a career-high five assists in the win. The White Plains, New York, native was accompanied by a trio of Yeowomen who netted nine points in the victory to lead the Crimson and Gold's offensive charge.Â
First-year
Sarah Thompson tallied nine points on a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to go along with three rebounds, two steals and two assists. Sophomore
Alex Stipano netted nine points of 3-of-11 shooting. She also hauled in six rebounds, offered up four assists and finished with a game-high four takeaways.Â
Rookie
Ally Driscoll led all of the Yeowomen's bench players with nine points, eight boards and two assists in the win.
On the glass,
Olivia Canning and
Abby Andrews led the rebounding effort with 15 and 11, respectively. The duo both posted eight points in the triumph on Wednesday night.
In the opening frame the Yeowomen took command with a 44.4% shooting effort (8-of-18) from the field. With a comfortable lead at the first intermission, the Yeowomen extended it to double-figures once more at 21-10 and gained their largest advantage of the half, 26-12, before the Scots could stop the bleeding.Â
Wooster managed to trim back the Oberlin cushion, but the Yeowomen still took a positive seven-point spread into the locker room at the half at 30-23.Â
Out of the half, the Fighting Scots tried to claw back into it but the Crimson and Gold would again gain a double-digit advantage as time expired in the third quarter. A pair of free-throws from Andrews drew the Oberlin margin out to 11 with 2:51 left in the stanza.
A layup from rookie
Jasmine Sorrells, en route to a six-point performance off of the bench, would extend the advantage out to 15 as the clock ticked under a minute in the third, but a three-ball from the Scots' Cat Fiorito dialed the Oberlin advantage back to 12 heading into the final frame.
The closing period was all Oberlin as they extended their lead to 24 with under a minute left in regulation. A last second three-pointer made the score 68-47, where it would stay as time expired.
The victory in the midweek conference bout pushes the Yeowomen to 2-4 overall and 2-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play having toppled Hiram on November 19.
After a week off from competition, the Yeowomen will take their unbeaten league record on the road to Granville, Ohio and the campus of Denison University for a battle of NCAC foes. Tipoff on Wednesday, December 7, is slated for 7:30 p.m.
