Women’s Hoops Falls to Tigers

OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College women's basketball suffered their third straight North Coast Athletic Conference loss, after DePauw University took down the Yeowomen, 69-40, inside Philips Gymnasium.

The Tigers nearly turned in a wire-to-wire win, but Oberlin struck for the first bucket of the game. From there it was all DePauw. The Tigers locked the game at 2-2 on the ensuing possession and went on to extend their lead to double figure with a 16-6 run.

By the end of the second quarter, the Tiger would extend to 21 before the halftime break. Out of the intermission, the Yeowomen continued to struggle to gain traction as DePauw kept their 21-point upper hand through the third. The Yeowomen managed to trim the margin back under 20, 58-39 with 6:23 remaining in rgulation. Unfortunately, DePauw closed the game on a 9-1 scoring run to send the Yeowomen to 4-7 in league play and back to .500 at 10-10 overall.

The Oberlin women were plagued by turnovers as the Tigers capitalized for 35 points off of turnovers and 20 fast break points. The DePauw bench also outworked the Yeowomen reserves to the tune of 26-12.

Ten of those Oberlin bench points came from sophomore forward Anna Moore, marking a season-high. In 18 minutes, Moore posted 10 points on 3-of-4 (75%) shooting including a 4-for-7 (57.1%) performance from the charity stripe with one block and two rebounds.

First-year Olivia Canning chipped in with eight points and added two blocks to her single-season record total, which now stands at 68 following the loss.

The Tigers played stymy defense as no other Yeowomen finished in double-figures scoring.

DePauw was led by Claire Ryan, who registered 17 points on 7-of-13 (53.8%) shooting and a game-high four steals. The Tigers Emily Budde and Colleen Connors also finished in double-figures with 13 and 10, respectively.

The Yeowomen don't get much of a break as they host the NCAC leading Denison University Big Red on Wednesday, February 3. Tip off from inside Philips Gymnasium is slated for 6 p.m. as the first half of a mid-week NCAC women's-men's doubleheader.
