Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end as they committed 24 turnovers in a 62-58 loss to the Allegheny College Gators on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The Gators high-intensity defense and full-court pressure made the Yeowomen uncomfortable with the basketball throughout the game, and resulted in them finishing with a 24-4 advantage in points off of turnovers.
Equipped with a deep bench, the Gators stayed fresh with 13 different players seeing time on the floor. The Oberlin miscues also resulted in the Gators taking 21 more shots than the Yeowomen, finishing with a 71-50 margin in attempts.
Despite all that, the Yeowomen still had every chance to win the game, but unfortunately couldn't pull it out in the end.
Sophomore forward
Abby Andrews continued her strong play with 14 points and five rebounds, leading all scorers in the game.
Lindsey Bernhardt added 13 points, while
Tyler Parlor chipped in with 10 points and six boards.
It was a tight battle throughout the first quarter with the Yeowomen holding a 13-12 lead after 10 minutes of play. In the second quarter a pair of Parlor free throws put Oberlin out in front, 19-17, at the 6:11 mark, but the Yeowomen went into the intermission trailing 26-24.
Oberlin appeared to take control of the contest in the third quarter, using a 12-2 run to open the quarter to secure a 36-28 lead. A layup from
Katie Lucaites would give Oberlin its largest lead of the game, 38-29, with 5:14 left in the quarter, but the Gators wouldn't go down without a fight.
With a string of three 3-pointers, Allegheny got right back into the game and eventually retook the lead on pair of layups that made the score 44-43 with 97 seconds left in the quarter before heading into the final frame up 46-45.
The Yeowomen fell behind by five and multiple times got within one in the final period, but they never tied it or took the lead in the fourth. Trailing 56-55 with 2:07 to go, the Yeowomen would later find themselves down by five, 60-55, with 34 seconds remaining. A layup from Parlor with five seconds left cut the lead to two, but it was too little too late as Rachel Vigliotti hit two free throws for the Gators to secure the win.
None of the 13 players for the Gators scored in double figures, but a trio of players led them with nine points each. Both teams are now 10-8 overall with Allegheny moving to 5-4 in the NCAC and Oberlin dropping to 4-5.
In total the game featured nine lead changes and six ties. The Yeowomen shot 42-percent (21-of-50), while the Gators checked in at just 35.2-percent (25-of-71).
Oberlin will look to get back on track on Wednesday evening when it travels to Kenyon College for a 6 p.m. showdown with the Ladies.
