Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen Open 2016 With a Convincing Win

OBERLIN, Ohio - Oberlin College women's basketball opened the New Year with a confident, 76-47, win over the Kalamazoo Hornets on Saturday afternoon.

Though senior leading-point scorer Lindsey Bernhardt led the Oberlin women with 19 points, it was a team effort that lifted head coach Kerry Jenkins' crew over the Hornets. Sophomore forward Abby Andrews had a special afternoon in Philips Gymnasium, striking for her first-career double-double with 13 points and career-high 12 rebounds. Her season-high points total came off of a 6-of-8 shooting performance from the field.

Andrews was a force in the paint, hauling in nine defensive boards and helping the Yeomen to a 44-30 advantage in points in the paint.

Bernhardt also handed out a game-high five assists to accompany her fourth-best scoring performance of the season.

Including Bernhardt's game-high and Andrews double-double, Oberlin's starting five all finished in double figures scoring. Senior Caroline Hamilton and first-year center Olivia Canning both rattled off 11 points in the win on 5-of-9 (55.5%) and 5-of-6 (83.3%) shooting, respectively.

Second-year Tyler Parlor rounded out the starters with 10 points on 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the floor to go along with four assists and seven rebounds.

Oberlin held a steady 3-point lead after one period and extended its first-half advantage with a big second quarter. While the Hornets struggled, shooting 9.1% (1-of-11) from the field in the second quarter, the Yeowomen hit on 8-of-10 to stroll into the half-time break with a 37-22 lead.

The Yeowomen roared out of the half to obtain their largest lead of the day, 62-31, with 30 seconds left in the third with a jumper from Parlor.

The Hornets tried to chip away as the final ten minute stanza passed, but the deficit was too large and the Yeowomen, too resilient. Kalamazoo would cut the Oberlin lead to 23, 70-46, at the 3:23 mark, but the Yeowomen used the next few possessions to cruise to a 29-point victory to open 2016.

The win moves Jenkins' squad back to .500 at 6-6 overall, as they remain a winless 0-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The win over the Hornets also marked the final non-conference regular season matchup of the season for the the Oberlin women as they now face all NCAC opponents the rest of the way.

Next up will be the Kenyon College Ladies as they invade Philips Gymnasium on Wednesday, January 6. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
