Baseball Splits on Saturday

Oberlin, Ohio – Behind sophomore Kyle Dominy's masterful pitching performance in game two, the Oberlin College baseball team earned a 5-1 win against the visiting Kenyon College Lords in the nightcap after their comeback attempt in game one fell short, 7-6.

Dominy (3-1), a southpaw from Phoenix, Arizona tossed seven strong innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits and a walk. He threw just 76 pitches (50 strikes) and recorded 15 groundball outs along the way.

The victory snapped a seven-game skid for the Yeomen and marked their first NCAC East win of the season. They are now 10-15 overall and 1-3 in the league, while the Lords sit at 15-11 and 5-5 in conference play.

The Lords scratched out their lone run of the game in the top of the first as Matt Von Roemer reached on an error and would later score on a single to left by Jake Dunn. However, the Yeomen wasted no time in answering back as Jeff Schweighoffer led off with a double to the gap in right center and would even the score on Andrew Hutson's single through the left side.

It would remain 1-1 all the way until the seventh, as Kenyon pitcher Thomas Morris (4-2) was just as effective as Dominy for much of the way. However, in the end he would get tagged with the loss as the Yeomen touched him up for four runs in the inning.

Blaise Dolcemaschio and Schweighoffer started the seventh with back-to-back singles and Decker would reach on a fielding error by Morris as he had trouble handing his sacrifice bunt attempt. Following an out at the plate, senior captain Benjamin Whitener would rope a 2-2 pitch down the right field line to score two runs and ultimately chase Morris from the game. However, the Yeomen weren't done there as senior Danny Baldocchi came through with a two-run single back up the box to cap the game's scoring.

Rookie sidearmer Milo Sklar would come in to finish the job on the mound. The Lords would put two runners on with two outs in the eighth and following a leadoff a walk in the ninth; Sklar induced a double play to escape both innings unscathed.

Baldocchi and Schweighoffer each finished with two hits in the game, accounting for four of the Yeomen's 10.  Decker, who went 1-for-3 in the lid-lifter, was 1-for-2 in the nightcap to extend his hitting streak to 20 games.

In game one the Yeomen spotted the Lords six runs in the first inning and could not quite dig their way out of the large hole despite their valiant efforts.

Starter Harrison Wollman (0-3) lasted just two thirds of an inning; surrendering six runs on four hits, a walk and an error of his own doing that hindered the cause. Of the six runs, just two were earned.

Sophomore Ben Lovett came out the pen and allowed the Yeomen to sneak back into the game as he tossed 3.1 innings of no-hit ball. He registered two strikeouts, six groundball outs and just one walk.

Oberlin cut the lead in half, plating three runs in the third on four hits. Following hits by Ryan Bliss and Brian Hemmert, Decker delivered a two-RBI single that got past a diving Phillip Nam at second base. Hutson would then follow with a hard-hit ball back up the middle to add another Yeomen run.

In the top of the fifth, the Lords would add on what proved to be an all-important insurance run, but the Yeomen would get it right back in the home-half of the inning thanks to two Kenyon errors.

In the sixth the Yeomen put the pressure on the Lords, plating two runs to get within a run. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Hutson followed a bases-loaded walk to Decker to score the runs. However, the Yeomen could have taken the lead as Baldocchi drove a ball to deep right center that was tracked down by Dunn to end the inning and leave three Yeomen on base.

After a clean top of the seventh from Sklar, the Yeomen were hoping to find some walk-off magic. An infield single by Mitch Novak got things going and Justin Cruz would then walk to put the potential game-winning run on base with just one out. With Bliss up at the plate he was hit by a pitch, but instead of being awarded first base, he was told to stay put by the home plate umpire as he deemed that the Yeomen left fielder leaned in on the pitch.

So instead of having bases loaded with one out and the game-winning run in scoring position, Bliss would go on to fly out.  Spencer Byers would then get Hemmert to ground out to end the game as he locked down his fourth save of the season.

These same two teams will do it again tomorrow at Dill Field with first pitch of game one set for 1 p.m.
