Tucson, AZ – First-year
Sean Kiley turned in another promising pitching performance and
Benjamin Whitener remained locked in at the plate as the Oberlin College baseball defeated Gustavus Adolphus 6-2 in game one before dropping the nightcap 19-10.
Kiley, a native of Studio City, California, scattered seven hits and struck out five in the complete-game victory. He needed just 83 pitches – 66 of which were strikes – to get through the Gusties' lineup.
Kiley and Jacob Volness were locked in a pitcher's duel through four innings until the Yeomen finally busted things open in the fifth. Whitener, who was 2-for-2 in the game, hit a towering two-run home run over the wall in right center and
Blaise Dolcemaschio followed with a sac fly to center that scored
Ryan Bliss after he tripled to make it a 3-0 Yeomen lead.
In the sixth the Gusties cut the lead to one, using three hits to score two runs, but the Yeomen backed Kiley by adding on three more tallies of their own in the home-half of the inning.
Kyle Decker, who has now hit safely in eight straight games, started the rally with a double to center and would then come around to score on a laser shot by
Andrew Hutson that bounced off the third basemen into left field.
Danny Baldocchi then joined the hit parade with a ground-rule double that hopped over the wall in right center to plate Hutson. The final run would come across on a bases-loaded walk to Bliss.
With a four-run lead in hand, Kiley sat down the Gusties in order to put the finishing touches on his masterpiece.
In game two the Gusties scored at least one run in every inning, using 18 hits and 11 walks to post 19 runs. The Yeomen had 13 hits to their credit, but could not overcome the large deficit.
Junior catcher
Colin Brown was 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Hutson added two hits to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
With the game still in the balance in the top of the fourth, Brown came through with a clutch two-run single to make it 5-3. Unfortunately, the Gusties answered back with five runs in the bottom of the frame before erupting for eight more in the fifth.
In the seventh the Yeomen offense rallied for five runs. Rookie
Sam Harris got things started with a single to right field and senior
Jeff Schweighoffer followed with a run-producing triple to the gap in right center. An RBI groundout by
Daniel Becker cleared the bases with two runs already in. Freshman
Jack Brewster dropped in his first-career hit in shallow left and moved over to third on
Mike Masella's ground-rule double. Both players then scored on
Brian Carney's opposite field triple to gap in left center before Brown capped the game's scoring by plating Carney with a single to center.
The Yeomen, who sit at 5-6, will have a split doubleheader tomorrow against Williams College at 9 a.m. PST and Middlebury College at 12:30 p.m. PST. Both games will be nine innings.
