Springfield, Ohio – Senior
Christina Marquette poured in 28 points, but it wasn't enough as the Oberlin College women's basketball team fell, 71-61, at Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon.
Marquette finished 9-of-21 from the floor and was the only Yeowoman to attempt a free throw in the game, going a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. She also matched rookie teammate
Tyler Parlor with a team-high eight rebounds. Junior guard
Lindsey Bernhardt was the only other Oberlin player in double figures as she finished with 11 points.
Marquette's 28-point performance gives her 1,524 for her career, as she became just the third player in school history to reach 1,500-point plateau. She now trails former Yeowomen great Ann Gilbert by just three points for second place on the all-time scoring list.
The opening 10 minutes of the first half was tightly contested, as it featured six ties and five lead changes. A
Katie Lucaites layup tied the game at 19, but the Oberlin offense went cold over the next five minutes as the Tigers ripped off a 16-0 run break things open. The Yeowomen would eventually head into the locker room staring at a 44-32 deficit.
After going down by as many as 17 points early in the second half, a 3-pointer from Marquette at the 11:27 mark shrunk the gap to just nine at 57-48. The seesaw battle would continue, but Oberlin would eventually get within striking distance as a triple-hit from
Caroline Hamilton made it just a five-point game, 64-59, with 2:56 left to play.
Following a Parlor layup in the final minute Oberlin again found itself down by five, 66-61. However, the Yeowomen were forced to foul down the stretch and the Tigers made 5-of-6 freebies to put the game away for good. Between the free throws, Oberlin was able to fire off two 3-point attempts on back-to-back possessions, but both shots were off the mark.
With the loss the Yeowomen dropped back to .500 at 8-8 overall and are now 4-3 in conference play. The Tigers moved their record to 12-5 and are now tied with Oberlin at 4-3 in the NCAC.
Oberlin shot 43.6-percent (24-of-55), but struggled from long range as they were 4-of-18 (22.2%) from beyond the arc. Katelyn Haralamos led the Tigers with 24 and as a team they shot 45.2-percent (28-of-62).
Wittenberg had a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint and also benefitted from a substantial discrepancy at the free throw line. Oberlin got whistled for 17 fouls in the game, while the Tigers drew the referees attention just seven times in the game. Wittenberg would go on to make 13-of-17 (76.5%) free throws in the win.
The Yeowomen will return home on Wednesday night to host Ohio Wesleyan University at 6 p.m.
