Oberlin, Ohio – On a cold and overcast afternoon, the Oberlin College baseball team was able to outlast the visiting Hiram College Terriers, winning both of games of the double-dip by the scores of 5-3 and 5-4 to complete the four-game series sweep.

In the lid-lifter, freshman Drew Mixter earned the win with 4.2 innings on the bump where he allowed just one earned run and five hits to go along with a career-high seven strikeouts. Senior #P.J. Carter# finished the job with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his third save of the season.

Oberlin (14-22, 5-11 NCAC East) broke through with a four-run third inning that featured RBI singles by Ryan Mouch, Brandon Cantrill and Jeremy Simon. The Yeomen plated the fourth run of the inning on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt by #P.J. Carter# that nearly scored two runs, but Simon was cut down at the plate trying to score from second base on the play.

Following a Hiram run in the top of the fourth, Mouch would add his second RBI and second of his three hits in the game to score Jason James.

The Terriers (2-26, 0-14 NCAC East) took advantage of three Oberlin errors to score two runs in the fifth, but Carter came in with two runners in scoring position to fan Justin Street to get the Yeomen out of trouble.

Hiram threatened in the seventh with three hits, but Carter left bases juiced to hold on for the Oberlin win.

In game two, sophomore Grady Campion turned in his best outing of the season as he worked 4.2 innings – surrendering seven hits and four earned runs, but left the game with score tied at four. For the second time in as many days, Zach Lipshultz got the win out of the pen, but unlike yesterday where he worked 3.1 innings, he threw just two pitches to record the final out in the fifth.

Following a double play ball in the home-half of the fifth, Brandon Cantrill belted a double to left field and Simon sent him home with an opposite-field single to right for what proved to be the game-winning run.

Rookie Jason James came on to work the sixth and got into a jam with back-to-back walks to start the inning, however, he was able to bare down to get out of it unharmed. The Lousiville, Colorado, native finished the job in seventh to earn his first collegiate save.

Hiram used single tallies and in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead, but Oberlin plated three in the bottom of the third to take its first lead of the game. The first run came across on squeeze bunt by Ben Kauder. Cantrill, who was 3-for-3, added an RBI single and Simon tacked on a sac fly.

Following another RBI squeeze bunt by Verne in the fourth to give Oberlin a 4-2 edge, Hiram quickly got back to even with a pair of runs to chase Campion out of the game. However, Lipshultz and James shut them out to rest of the way to preserve the win.

Simon finished the twinbill 4-for-5 with three RBI, while Cantrill was also 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.

Oberlin will play its final home game of the season on Thursday when local rival Baldwin-Wallace College comes to town for a single nine-inning game. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
