Wooster, Ohio – The nationally-ranked College of Wooster Fighting Scots proved to be too much for the Oberlin College baseball team on Saturday afternoon as they took both ends of a doubleheader against the Yeomen, winning game one 9-1 and following with an 12-2 triumph in game two.
“They are a really good ball club,” head coach
Eric Lahetta said. “But our guys battled all day long and never gave up. We did some things well, but need to sure up in some areas also. I look forward to getting another crack at them tomorrow.”
After falling behind 3-0 in the second inning of game two, the Yeomen broke through in the fourth as
Brandon Cantrill came through with a two-out single down the right field line – sending
Brian Verne across the dish. However, with runners on second and third the threat was short-circuited as Scots' hurler Justin McDowell recorded one of his seven strikeouts.
Wooster (17-3, 6-0 NCAC East) responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to chase Oberlin starter
Jason James out of the game and effectively put the game out of reach. James finished with 3.1 innings of work and was tagged for six earned runs on eight hits. The Colorado, native, also walked two and struck out two.
In game one the Scots tallied two runs in each of the first two innings and added three in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Oberlin's lone tally came in the top of the fifth as senior
Jeremy Simon started the inning with a double down the right field line and later scored on a single by Cantrill.
Sophomore
Phil Brua took the loss as he surrendered four hits and four runs in three innings.
Jared Ramirez,
Andrew Roth and
Grady Campion all saw time in relief.
Oberlin (7-13, 0-2 NCAC East) and Wooster will do it all over again tomorrow afternoon as they complete the series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Art Murray Field. Fans can follow all of the action via
