Game One Box l Game Two Box
Phoenix, Ariz. – Solid pitching and hitting performances by the Elmhurst Bluejays allowed them to cruise to a doubleheader sweep of the Oberlin College baseball team on Sunday afternoon in Phoenix, Arizona. The Jays took game one 7-1 and followed with a 13-4 victory in game two.
Sophomore transfer Gideon Sterer paced the Yeomen offense with a 2-for-5 performance on a day that included his first home run in an Oberlin uniform – a two-run blast to right field in game two. He also led the way with five total bases in the twinbill.
Brandon Cantrill,
Jeremy Simon and Shane Hisner also added two hits on the afternoon.
In game one, the Yeomen were shutdown by the Bluejays' Cody Boals as he went the distance - striking out seven hitters and surrendering just five hits and one earned run. The lone Oberlin tally came in the seventh on a single up the middle by Cantrill that sent Simon across the dish.
Oberlin starter
Eric Gibbs took the loss after he lasted just 0.2 of an inning as Elmhurst touched him up for three runs on five hits.
In the nightcap, OC plated a run in the top of the first as
Ben Master, who led off the game with a single, scored on a Simon base hit. Unfortunately, the Bluejays responded with five runs of their own in the home-half of the inning.
Oberlin got within striking distance on the Sterer two-run shot in the second, but a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame by Elmhurst, followed by a single tally in the third and four in the fourth put the game out of reach.
Rookie
Jason James took the loss as he was banged around for 10 hits and 12 runs (7 earned) in 3.2 innings.
Oberlin will look to bounce back tomorrow against Knox College. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST).
