Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team welcomed members from eight other schools to compete at its own invitational event over the weekend.
Players were matched up against each other based on their Universal Tennis Rating (UTR). The event consisted of three rounds of doubles and singles play.
In doubles action,
Zachary Vaughn went 2-1 with two different partners. He and
Will Katzman were 8-5 winners over F. Bulnes Aramburu and Brandon Giordanelli from Earlham College in round two, while Vaughn and
Matthew Porges would go on to prevail, 9-8, against Wooster's Joaquin Abos Amo and Nathan Devereux in round three.
Porges was also an opening-round winner as he and sophomore
Stephen Gruppuso were 8-2 victors over Bulnes Aramburu and Giordanelli.
In the second round, Gruppuso and
Manickam Manickam took down the Wooster pairing of Titas Bera and Jorrit de Rouw by an 8-3 count.
Bothers,
Robert Gittings and
Matthew Gittings, earned a second-round win with an 8-4 defeat of Henry Wessel and Luis Platas of Kenyon.
In singles play, senior
Michael Drougas won his lone match of the weekend as he took down Earlham's Vitalii Stadnyk by identical 6-2 counts.
Katzman also earned a straight-set win over Jake Abbott of Ohio Northern by the scores of 7-5, 6-3.
Manickam opened singles play with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 triumph over Kenyon's Max Smith.
Porges and Vaughn each registered their fourth singles win of the year. In the third round, the rookie Porges upended Aleksandr Sergeev of Earlham by the scores of 6-2, 6-3. Vaughn was also a third-round winner as handed Case Western's Aris Jhaveri a straight-set loss by matching 6-2 scorelines.
The Yeomen tennis team will be back in action in two weeks at the ITA Regionals in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
