Oberlin, Ohio – Taking on the nation's 11
th ranked team, the Oberlin College women's tennis team didn't have enough firepower to overtake the DePauw University Tigers, falling 5-2 in the semifinals of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
“I was happy with how we played and competed out there today” Head Coach
Constantine Ananiadis said. “DePauw is a very good team and they were just better than us today, as they are strong from top to bottom. With that being said we look forward to ending our season a high note tomorrow as we go for third place.”
The Yeowomen, who entered the match at No. 30 in the country and No. 6 in the region, secured match points at No. 1 doubles and singles. The Tigers came in as the tournament's top seed and at No. 3 in the region.

Farah Leclercq and sophomore
Grace Porter made a large statement to the NCAA Selection Committee that they belong in the field of 16 teams for the national doubles championship tournament. The region's third-ranked pairing outlasted the Tigers' duo of Claire Marshall and Megan Crowley – who are ranked one spot ahead – in thrilling fashion. Leclercq and Porter earned their second win of the weekend with a 9-8 triumph, which included a back-and-forth 10-8 win in the tiebreak.
Leclercq, a native of Ocala, Florida, also took down Maggie MacPhail in the top singles flight. Leclercq, who is No. 9 in the region, bested the fourth-ranked MacPhail in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. The victory all but guaranteed Leclercq's spot in the individual national tournament at the end of May.
Fighting through an injury, junior
Brenna Sheldon still put forth a great challenge to Marshall at No. 2 singles, but she fell short by the scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
Crowley took on Porter in the third flight and was able to sneak past the Oberlin second-year standout 6-1, 6-2.
The third singles win for the Tigers came at No. 5 where Oberlin rookie
Erin Johnson was outlasted by Taylor Mahr 6-4, 6-1.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead into singles after winning 8-3 and 8-1 at No. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively.
Despite its high national ranking, Oberlin was seeded just fourth in the conference tournament. The Yewomen will take on third-seed Kenyon tomorrow at 11 a.m. to determine third place.
