Oberlin, Ohio – Seniors
Farah Leclercq and
Preeya Shah won the final regular season matches of their careers on Saturday, as the Oberlin College women's tennis team defeated visiting Allegheny College, 7-2, in the John W. Heisman Field House.
The Yeowomen began the day by taking two of three matches in doubles play. The team of Leclercq and sophomore
Grace Porter tied the match at 1-1 when they took No. 1 doubles, 8-3. Shah and first-year
Erin Johnson got Oberlin's second win of the day when they defeated Allegheny's Laura Steel and Andrea Brush in second doubles, 8-6.
In singles, Johnson went on to put the Yeowomen up 3-1 in the match when she came out victorious in fourth singles by the scores of 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, Leclercq added her second victory of the day after defeating Carolyn Shetter in two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Porter clinched the match for Oberlin in No. 2 singles when she came out on top, 6-2, in the first set and worked for a 7-5 edge in the second.
Shah won a three-set battle in third singles against Sloan Prince, giving Oberlin a 6-1 lead in the match. Shah took the first set, 6-3, before falling in the second by a margin of 5-7. In the tiebreak, Shah battled back after facing match point with the score 8-9 and went on to win the third set, 12-10.
First-year
Ariana Abayomi rounded out the Yeowomen winners, as she took fifth singles by the score of 6-2, 6-2.
"That was our team of a couple of weeks ago today," head coach
Constantine Ananiadis said. "We were happy, aggressive, and played to win. What a great way to send our two seniors off. We're so excited for the conference tournament next weekend."
Oberlin finished the season with a 16-6 regular season record, a 2-1 conference record, and ranked 30th in the nation and sixth in the region.
The Yeowomen will continue play at the NCAC Championships, which will take place at their home site of Oberlin College. The tournament is set to begin on April 26 at 9 a.m.
