Oberlin, Ohio – The hot start for the Oberlin College men's tennis team continued on Saturday as the Yeomen rallied from a 2-1 deficit after doubles to win the match 6-3 over John Carroll University.
With the win, the Yeomen improved to 6-1 on the year as they have ripped off six straight wins since dropping the season opener to Baldwin Wallace back on February 9.
“I was proud of the way the guys bounced back, especially after two close losses in doubles play,” first-year Head Coach
Eric Ishida said. “We were able to take control in singles early on and rode the momentum to the finish.”
Rookie
Brandon McKenna clinched the match at No. 6 singles where he was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Connor Burkhart.
Fellow newcomer
Callan Louis continued his torrid play as he improved to 7-0 at No. 2 in dual matches. He is riding a nine-match winning streak dating back to the fall season after earning a pair of 6-3 wins over Sean Graham.
Senior
Ben Turchin made it three in a row for him at No. 3 as he dispatched Sawyer Dina 7-5, 6-1, while
Soren Zeliger notched his sixth straight victory at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hunter Pellegrini.
Senior
Eliot Heaton, who has been fighting nagging injuries all season, rounded out the Yeomen winners with a 6-0, 6-4 triumph at No. 5.
In doubles play, Louis and Zeliger made short work of Burkhart and Dinia, cruising to an 8-2 win. However, both the number one and three matches were tightly contested with both Oberlin pairings coming out on the wrong side of a pair of 8-6 decisions.
The Yeomen will look to keep things rolling when they return to action down in Hilton Head, South Carolina, against Virginia Wesleyan on March 25.
