Oberlin, Ohio - Oberlin College Interim Delta Lodge Director of Athletics
Natalie Winkelfoos has named
Eric Ishida as the school's new Head Men's Tennis Coach.
Ishida, who comes to Oberlin after a successful tenure as the head women's tennis coach at Washington and Lee University, takes over the program from Oberlin alumnus Adam Shoemaker, who stepped down in June to become an assistant pro at Paramount Tennis Club.
Ishida brings a plethora of experience and success to Oberlin having been named as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in all five of his seasons (2008-12) as the head coach of the Generals women's team. No stranger to the national scene, Ishida has guided his team to a berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament in every season, which included a national runner-up finish in 2008.
“I am extremely honored to accept this position at Oberlin and have the opportunity to work with a great athletics administration and lead a team that is filled with tremendous promise and potential,” Ishida said. “I would like to thank Ms. Winkelfoos and the hiring committee for selecting for me for this position. I can't wait to start working with the team and have the fun begin.”
In five seasons as the Generals head coach, Ishida compiled an impressive 107-26 record and coached eight ITA All-Americans. His 2011 recruiting class was ranked No. 1 in the nation by
tennisrecruiting.net. Before becoming head coach in 2008, he spent the previous season as an assistant coach and helped Washington & Lee win the 2007 NCAA Championship.
“Eric emerged from a deep and talented applicant pool,” Winkelfoos said. “His strong background of success and vision for the program make him an excellent fit as the leader of our men's tennis team. I am extremely confident in his skills and ability to guide the team in a positive direction.”
A 2004 graduate from Ohio University, Ishida played three years of collegiate tennis at Wright State University before transferring to OU to complete his degree in physical education. Ishida, who is a USPTA P1 Certified Teaching Professional, will officially begin his duties with Oberlin on August 15.
