Los Angeles, Calif. - The Oberlin College women's tennis team took to the courts in sunny southern California yesterday in their first outdoor competition of the spring. The Yeowomen defeated Occidental College 8-1 in their first of three matches during spring break.
Oberlin was quick to get out in front as they were winners in two of three doubles matches.
Ariel Lewis and her first-year partner
Brenna Sheldon defeated Krishnaveni Subbiah and Emily Wilde in the No.1 doubles match-up 8-4. Lewis ranked 19th in the Central Region would also defeat Subbiah (10th in West Region) in the top singles spot 6-2, 6-3. The pair of wins give her 100 combined singles and doubles wins in her Oberlin College career.
In the third spot
Brie White-Dzuro and
Preeya Shah were 8-2 winners over Julie Housman and Isabella Ying.
Hitting in the second spot
Finley Gates and
Rebecca Brown were nipped 9-7 falling just short against Jessica Go and Katrina Gould.
"This wasn't one of our better matches quality-wise, but I was quite satisfied with the way we competed today. Oxy is a tricky team to play against and they made things tough for us especially under the lights and with this being our first outdoor match. We know we'll need to play a lot better though, if we are to have any chance against our next two opponents. I believe we can do that," said head coach
Constantine Ananiadis.
In singles play the Yeowomen dominated from the start sweeping the Tigers top to bottom. Hitting in the third and fourth positions Sheldon and Shah each made quick work of their opponents as they won 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-0, respectively.
Brown was a winner hitting sixth over Housman 6-2, 6-4 to remain unbeaten when in the Oberlin line up.
In the No. 2 slot Gates had her hands full with Go, who's lob play made it diffuclt to take control of the match. After winning the first set 7-5, Gates dropped the second 6-2 before turning it up a notch and winning in the match in a super breaker 10-6.
Carolyn Ball was inserted into the singles line up in the No. 5 spot and also found herself in a bit of a back and forth match. Ball was a 6-1 winner in the first set then the Tiger's Wilde would rally for a 6-0 win in the second before Ball used a 10-8 super breaker effort to seal the sweep of singles matches.
The Yeowomen (7-7) will have today off before they visit Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday in a match that is slated to begin at 5 p.m. PST/8 p.m. EST.
