The Yeowomen secured the first round win with victories at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions. Lewis grabbed her 20th win of the season defeating Quigney (6-1, 7-5) in the top spot.
Carolyn Ball hitting at fourth singles took out Cohn in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to notch her 10th win of the year.
Thebaut cruised through her match at No. 6 to earn the decisive fifth team point besting Mackenzie Conway, 6-0, 6-1.
“We had a good first day of the NCAC's, we played well against OWU and turned around and put in a good effort against a tough Denison team. Their lineup is deep and they are consistent from top to bottom, however, I thought we played them close through singles,” commented Head Coach
Constantine Ananiadis.
In semifinal action, fifth-ranked Denison took a commanding 3-0 lead at the conclusion of doubles play. DU's Marta Drane and Kristin Cobb the Central Region's third best pairing pushed by Lewis and Gates 8-3.
The Big Red (15-4) would continue to roll clinching the match with wins at four and six singles.
Lewis and Cobb would continue to battle it out in the top spot. The NCAC requires ranked individuals to complete their matches. The Oberlin ace, ranked seventh, took the first set 6-4 before dropping the second 6-3 and falling short in the super tiebreaker 10-6 to tenth ranked Cobb.
“We are looking forward to our match with Allegheny tomorrow,” said Ananiadis. The Yeowomen defeated the Gators a week ago (5-4) in a regular season NCAC match-up.
Oberlin (12-10) will return to the courts tomorrow playing in the third and fourth place consolation match. The Yeowomen will square off against Allegheny College at 11 a.m. in Granville. If weather forces play to move indoors Oberlin and Allegheny will play their match on the Kenyon College campus in the Jasper Tennis Center.
