Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's tennis match with the Kenyon College Ladies this afternoon featured a pair of undefeated team's in North Coast Athletic Conference action. Kenyon, tonight's winner, earned the No. 1 seed from the East Division heading into the conference tournament.
Entering tonight's match hoping to gain the top seed and finish 3-0 in the East Division the young Oberlin squad showed a bit of nerves during the first few games of doubles action and throughout singles play.
Kenyon's second doubles pairing got past first-years
Preeya Shah and
Brie White-Dzuro first, 8-3.
Ariel Lewis and
Finley Gates squared off against the seventh ranked duo in the Central Region. Prita Kidder and Amy Schlessman, a tandem with NCAA potential, led from the start but the Oberlin duo would work hard to fight back into the match before falling 8-5.
In the third doubles slot
Rebecca Brown and
Julie Christensen showed early signs of taking a match from the Ladies as they raced out to leads of 3-0, 4-1, and even held a 6-3 advantage. However, the duo of Erin Ivanoff and Lydia Winkler would have other plans as they evened the score at six (6) all and then took the final two games to earn the 8-6 win providing Kenyon with a 3-0 cushion heading into singles play.
“Kenyon is a good team and they played well and were just better than we were today, give credit to them for earning their wins. We were a little nervous to start the match. Our girls wanted to win so badly and be the No. 1 seed that they were a bit tight and we let one of the doubles matches slip away,” Head Coach
Constantine Ananiadis said following the match.
Singles action proved to be a little uneventful, the winners of each match played good tennis to earn their respective wins. Brown, hitting in the No. 5 spot, found a little redemption as she was a straight set winner defeating her doubles foe, Winkler, 6-3, 7-5.
Lewis improved to 19-6 on the year in the top spot for the Yeowomen. She cruised out to early leads in each set and eventually took down Kidder in identical sets 6-2, 6-2.
Oberlin (11-9, 2-1 NCAC East) will use the remainder of the week to prepare for the upcoming NCAC Tournament.
