Fredericksburg, Virginia – In non-conference action the Oberlin College women's tennis team traveled to No. 16 University of Mary Washington during their spring trip in preparation for the Great Lakes College Association Tournament.
Mary Washington (8-6) proved to be a formidable foe as they defeated the Yeowomen 8-1.
“This was a good effort by the girls in tough, windy conditions. We played really well through doubles, probably our best showing of the year even though we didn't come away with the results.” said head coach
Constantine Ananiadis, “Mary Washington is a good team, very consistent throughout their lineup proving that they are deserving of their national ranking.”
Oberlin's top pairing of
Ariel Lewis and
Finley Gates faced the Atlantic South Region's No. 11 doubles partnership of Courtney Goimarac and Kathryn Schafer. The Eagles duo would knock out an 8-5 win.
In singles play Lewis, No. 10 in the Central Region, was again on opposing sides of the net from the Eagles' Goimarac, who is currently ranked No. 18 in the Atlantic South. Lewis proved to be too much for the Mary Washington ace as she defeated her in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) for her sixth consecutive win.
Ananiadis commented, “This was a big win for Ariel. She played well and is showing that she can compete with the best in the country.”
Preeya Shah hitting from the second singles spot was upended by 21st ranked Kathryn Schafer in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) ending her three match win streak.
