Ariel Lewis defeated fifth ranked Meghan Damico tonight.
Final Results

Granville, Ohio
– Oberlin College first-year Ariel Lewis was a big winner this afternoon as she upset the Central Region's fifth ranked singles player, Meghan Damico. The Big Red, however, proved to be too much for the Yeowomen tennis squad as Denison University won the dual match 6-3.

Lewis, a Vacaville, Calif. native, moved up three spots in the newest Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings this week to 15th. She is proving to be one of the best singles players in the region.

Damico, a two-time NCAC Player of the Year, squared off against Lewis in the No. 1 spot. They would exchange strokes for two and a half hours as they battled in a great match. Lewis won in straight sets using a 7-6 (7-1) tiebreak victory to claim the first set. She then dominated the second winning 6-2.

“This was the best collegiate match Ariel has played this season and it is a great win for her. She is showing what we've always known, she is one of the best in the region and the nation,” exclaimed head coach Constantine Ananiadis.

Denison, the Nation's 8th ranked team, would display their dominance early in the match as they swept doubles action, winning in all three spots, 8-1. The Big Red boasts the third and seventh ranked doubles duos.

The Yeowomen would get another win from a second freshman, Nattie Chan was a straight set winner over Courtney Steiner (6-2, 6-1) in the No. 4 spot. Chan has won three straight and tonight's win was her ninth of the season.

Senior, Jane Hayden filled out the OC lineup at No. 6 where she was in a marathon match of her own. Maggie Colvin took the first set 6-4. Hayden would drop only one game in the second set and then the two played a super tiebreaker in lieu of the third set with the dual match already decided. Hayden was a 15-13 winner in the tiebreak.

Ananiadis commented, “We competed well in singles play after falling behind 3-0. The girls were in every match and this result will give us confidence going into our conference match with Kenyon next week.”

The Yeowomen (12-10, 2-0 NCAC East) are back in action Tuesday, April 21 as they travel to Gambier to face Kenyon College. The conference match is slated for a 4:30 p.m. start.
