My Favorite Time of Year
Dear Friends,
There’s nothing quite like the sense of renewal on a college campus each autumn. As some students return to Oberlin while others arrive for the first time, the air is filled with an enthusiasm for learning and a palpable sense of hope and idealism. Together, as students, faculty, and staff, we begin the exciting work of adding another chapter to Oberlin’s incomparable history.
Walking the practice fields each afternoon, I am struck by the passion and joy perpetuated by our scholar-athletes. Their love of physical activity, collaboration, and competition inspires those of us whose lives are dedicated to teaching and learning through college athletics. Our steps are a bit bouncier and our smiles are a little wider thanks to the wonderful students with whom we work.
Many exciting events and a few new facilities add to the spirit of renewal this fall. The second annual athletics homecoming is slated for September 19-20, while our football team travels to the University of Chicago on October 11. Both events feature tailgate parties for alumni and friends (details may be found at goyeo.com). Men’s and women’s soccer play a series of night contests at the newly-lit Fred Shults Field. The cross country teams host three meets, including the conference championship, on the college’s new woodchip running trail. Finally, Williams Ice Rink will become Williams Field House over the next several months as the college invests in a short-term replacement for Jones Field House.
Experience the annual renewal of Oberlin this fall! Come back to campus for homecoming or a tailgate; attend one of our varsity contests here or on the road; or follow our progress on the web. No matter which method of engagement suits you best, you will find passion and excitement this year in athletics. Let’s Go Yeo!
