Wooster, Ohio - The Oberlin College softball team finished on the wrong end of a, 3-2, 8-inning affair in game one and then suffered a 2-0 setback in the nightcap at the College of Wooster on Sunday afternoon.
Oberlin jumped on the Scots from the onset, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on senior
Alaina Di Dio's two-run single up the middle that scored pinch runner
Gina Lombard and
Wren Norris.
Loren Carter, who finished 3-for-4, got the rally going with a single back up the box before Norris poked a double into right field, setting the table for Di Dio to pick up her fourth and fifth RBIs of the season.
The Scots took advantage of two hits and two Oberlin errors to scratch out a run in the second and would then even the count at 2-2 in the fifth.
Singles from
Katie Austin, Carter, and Norris loaded the bases with one out in the top part of the eighth inning, but Tori Conner would induce an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play to squash the threat and keep the game tied.
The home half of the eighth inning started with a double from Cate Barkdoll and after she moved just 60 feet away on a passed ball, the Scots' first basemen would score the game-winning run on an infield single from Madi Yankauskas.
Hailey Alspach was the tough-luck loser allowing just one earned run as she struck out five and scattered 10 hits while going walk-free.
The Oberlin bats didn't find much traction in game two as the Yeowomen suffered their seventh shutout loss of the season.
Austin was impressive for the second straight start as she allowed just six hits and three walks over six innings of work.
Wooster got a two-out RBI single from Conner in the third and added an insurance run in the sixth on a squeeze bunt from Ella Wolff.
A pair of singles by
Haley Carlson and
Samantha Pinedo sandwich around a hit batter loaded the bases with one out in the third. Still, a bad break occurred when
Maya Means was ruled out for interference trying to advance from second to third - thus forcing Carlson back to third base and taking an Oberlin run off the board.
Oberlin also had a pair of hits in the fifth courtesy of
Kailey Dunham and Means, but pinch runner
Roxie Freifeld was thrown out trying to steal third, short-circuiting the inning.
Oberlin did not threaten in the sixth or seventh as the Scots finished off the sweep.
The Yeowomen are back in action on Thursday when they play host to John Carroll University at 3:30 p.m.
