Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's tennis team took down Allegheny College, 5-2, on Friday morning in the first round of the NCAC Championships on the Don Hunsinger Courts.

"Allegheny gave us all we could handle today," head coach Constantine Ananiadis said. "They are a tough team and they've improved a lot since last year. I was really happy with our doubles and the way we competed in singles."

Oberlin began the day by sweeping the Gators in doubles play, 3-0. Senior Farah Leclercq and sophomore Grace Porter won at No. 1 by the unblemished margin of 8-0, while senior Preeya Shah and first-year Erin Johnson took third doubles, 8-3.

Junior Brenna Sheldon and first-year Ariana Abayomi battled to a 9-8 victory in No. 3 doubles after taking the tiebreak at 10-8.

In singles play, Allegheny took two to pull within one, 3-2, when Johnson fell in fourth singles and first-year Alex Kahn came up short in No. 6 by the scores of 6-3, 6-3, and 6-4, 6-1, respectively.

Abayomi got Oberlin's fourth win of the day at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2, while Leclercq clinched the match for the Yeowomen in first singles at 6-3, 6-4.

"It certainly wasn't our best match tennis-wise," Ananiadis said, "but we got through it and that's what is important."

The Yeowomen will start second round action when they take on #11 DePauw University tomorrow morning, April 27, at 11 a.m.
